Approximately 25 percent of otherwise normally developing young children experience feeding difficulties. These may not only be disruptive to the child's physical and emotional development, they also may affect the whole family. In When Your Child Won't Eat or Eats Too Much, author Dr. Irene Chatoor teaches parents how to navigate the challenges of early feeding development and help their children establish healthy eating habits. Based on clinical experiences and research studies, Chatoor helps you understand your child's specific feeding problems-whether your child has difficulty feeling hunger, has difficulty determining fullness, refuses to eat certain foods, or is just plain scared to eat. When Your Child Won't Eat or Eats Too Much presents specific suggestions and practical tips on how to understand and manage each of these feeding problems while promoting a healthy eating environment for the whole family. It also describes how feeding difficulties can be prevented and how discipline can be established without resorting to coercive measures. Chatoor, a pediatric psychiatrist who has made fundamental contributions in her field, helps parents better understand and deal with the challenges of early feeding development and the special feeding issues of their children.

Life Changing Book
By S.G.
I spent almost all 18 months of my daughter's life battling food and trying to get her to eat. Everyone, including the pediatrician (!), would say "it's just a phase," or "my child also did not eat for about a year and ended up fine," but that was not enough for me to accept the situation. I tried EVERYTHING, and I mean everything, but nothing worked. The stress, the anxiety, the anger, the fear of not knowing if she was taking in enough nutrients and growing well -- all of this came to an end with this book. We are fortunate to have been able to meet Dr. Chatoor in person and, after just one visit, change my daughter's approach to food THAT VERY SAME DAY. She now eats better than anyone else and our family dinners are now happy, happy, happy occasions. Thank you, Dr. Chatoor.
PS - This book also applies to children who eat but are picky or misbehave at the table. My other children are now also better eaters because of this book.

Very useful resource for parents dealing with food problems.
By Natasha
This book explains in depth how to deal with sensory aversion. I was looking for that, as my son eats only 2-3 food items. The method of timeout sounds a little harsh to me. However if it's going to help him, i will give it a shot. I can completely relate to the case studies. This book is for parents whose kids have sensory aversion to food, infantile anorexia and other food problems.

This book was very helpful and enlightening with regard to my 5 year old son, who was actually seen by Dr. Chatoor when he was 1.5 years old. I read this book as a "refresher" for how we could continue to help him since he is an extremely picky eater. He was also diagnosed by Dr. Chatoor as having infantile anorexia as a young baby, a condition I had never heard of, until we went to see her. By following her advice, we were able to reverse his condition, so I know her advice works!
Althought some chapters deal with overeating, I read those as well. It is really fascinating how she breaks down the "rules" for eating that are so simple and make complete sense, regardless of the eating difficulty. It will make you analyze your own eating patterns. If you are looking for some simple guidelines for how to help your child with feeding issues, this is a great book. I read it in two nights- it was that easy to read. I especially enjoyed reading the case studies she presented, since she is able to track children over long periods of time. As a parents, it's nice to read about the long term consequences/outcomes.
This book is a good start to give you concrete ideas to try to help correct your child's eating issues. Of course, you may need to see a professional depending upon the severity of the issue, but the routines and structures she suggests are completely "doable" as a line of first defense. In fact, the eating routines she suggests would be wonderful for any household, not just ones experiencing eating issues.
