A well-chosen and readable selection

Editor Levy provides a good array of texts, starting with the Heidelberger professor Eisenmenger in 1710 and ending with some fellow named Yevgeny Yevseev, who published an "Anti-Zionist" screed in 1971, harmonized with the "anti-fascist" rhetoric current in the then Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. In between are selections from Voltaire, Wagner, Stoecker, von Treitschke, Marr, various committee works, the Protocolls, Henry Ford, a trio of drosches by Hitler(yemakh shmo), the statement of the Wahnsee Conference, as it was called, and a few other bits here and there.

Levy has added introductions to each historical section, along with a good "additional reading" selection. The entirety is prefaced by an attempt at a definition of "Anti-Semitism"; his attempt seems as good as any that doesn't resort to metaphysics. My only suggestion would have been to add a few more American selections; some of the urban rustics associated with Louis Farrakhan are mentioned in ancillary material but I think it would have been useful to add full examples of some of anti-Jewish rubbish that here and now rolls around burning in the American street, stinking and befouling the feckless rhetoricians who refuse to recognize it for what it is.

About the Author

Ilya Mikhelson had more than 30 years of experience in design, research, and teaching design of bridges, tunnels, subway stations, and buildings. He wrote numerous publications, including Precast Concrete for Underground Construction, Tunnels, and Subways and Building Structures.

Tyler G. Hicks, PE, is a consulting engineer and a successful engineering book author. He has worked in plant design and operation in a variety of industries, taught at several engineering schools, and lectured both in the United States and abroad. Mr. Hicks holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York. He is the author of more than 20 books in engineering and related fields, including Civil Engineering Formulas, Handbook of Mechanical Engineering Calculations, and Handbook of Energy Engineering Calculations.

Good Reference

So I read this book, and I think there is good coverage of topics overall. Go back and look at the good reviews that people have left about the first edition of this book, a couple people have made previous reviews in regards to using this book for engineering practice and as a study aid for the P.E. exam. The civil and structural engineering principles are perfectly in line, and the book is very thin to carry around; so you'll hardly notice it is in your briefcase.

I noticed that this book is not up to date, which is why I have a four-star review here. I will explain why the book is not up to date.

For instance, on page 132 of this book is a page on base plates for columns. The equation this book has for allowable bearing pressure is 0.35*f'c*square root(A2/A1). Now in the ACI 318-11 and AISC 360-05 codes, the equation is 0.85*f'c*square root(A2/A1). So the mathematical coefficients are different due to updated codes, but the equations and engineering principles are the same.

In Chapter 2 or 3 of this book, there are some formulas for properties of geometric sections. The author used Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, 4th edition. There is an 8th edition of Roark's formulas in print right now.

good basic formulas

I bought this book mainly for the frame analysis. I have referred to it on several occasions since buying it. I would recommend it.

Check the variables!

Inconsistent notation. For example, on the same page, it shows bending stress = M/S and shear stress = SV/Ib, except the two Ss aren't the same value. Again, on the same page, it shows S = I/c and SV/Ib = 3V/2A for rectangles. Great. But knowing that the shear modulus (S)=bh^2/6 and I=bh^3, SV/Ib 3V/2A. Why couldn't they use shear stress = QV/Ib like everyone else? Q being the static moment, not the shear modulus. In fairness, they do an example on the next page making it clear they aren't the same thing, but why use the same variable on the same page two rows apart from each other when they don't represent the same value!? It's supposed to be a quick reference guide. If you quickly looked at that page and ran with it, you'd get the wrong answer.

About the Author
Margaret Ramsey was 12 years old when her brother Frank died. Their younger brother Michael was to become Arch Bishop of Canterbury In an interview for the Financial Times in 1992 Margaret explained how the memory of her brother Frank had greatly influenced and shaped her life. It was probably because of him that rather than reading English at Cambridge she at the last moment changed her mind and opted for philosophy and later economics. After marrying a fellow academic Margaret Paul was fully engaged as a Fellow and Tutor in Economics at St Margaret Hall Oxford until her retirement in 1983 when Frank Ramsey was research and written . She died in 2003.

Interesting but ultimately disappointing

Ramsey was a brilliant Cambridge man who made significant contributions to logic, philosophy and economics by the time he died at age 26. He was respected by the greatest minds of his time, including Keynes and Wittgenstein. My interest in him is because of his connection to Wittgenstein. He translated Wittgenstein's book, the Tractatus, for its English publication at age 19; he wrote a detailed review of the book; he sought out Wittgenstein in rural Austria where he was teaching school for discussions, and he worked with Wittgenstein in 1929 when Wittgenstein returned to Cambridge and philosophy. This was a well-written and researched, but disappointing, book. Disappointing to me because there is nothing in the book about their relationship in 1929. It is as if a chapter is missing. Not only is there no new material about this period, but there is not even an account of it. Another disappointment is not due to the book but due to the life. Ramsey and his wife Lettice had an open marriage, which I did not know, and the author gives a detailed account of this. It caused a great deal of conflict and pain in the marriage, and was rather sickening to read about. I suppose it is a credit to the author (Ramsey's sister) that she was honest about this despite its poor reflection on her brother.
For a person who produced an impressive amount of work in his short life, he had a remarkably prescient (and Kantian) view of publication. In a letter to his mother in 1924 (p. 182) he wrote: "No one can suppose that you can't research for six months without having a paper ready by the end; if everyone wrote a paper every six months, the amount of trivial literature would swell beyond all bounds. Given time I shall produce a good paper, but if I hurry it will be ill-written, unintelligible and unconvincing." But before we take any comfort in this defense of reasonable productivity, we should also realize that Ramsey's fellowship at King's College, Cambridge, required 16 hours of teaching a week, even through most of the summer (p, 217).

Enjoyed the storyline. The climactic event was resolved a bit too quickly for my taste. The suspense built nicely but I found myself wanting more at the end. Would love to see more from this author.

About the Author
Conrad Fischer, M.D., Dr. Fischer is the Residency Program Director in Internal Medicine at Brookdale Hospital in New York City and is Associate Professor of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Medicine at Touro College of Medicine in New York City.
He teaches USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, Internal Medicine Board Review and Attending Recertification, and USMLE Step 1 Physiology.

Somebody forgot to proofread...

I have only looked at about 20 of these cards so far, but there are so many typos on them that I have put them all back in the box and do not intend to trust my studying to them. For instance, ONE SINGLE CARD (Psychiatry Card 4) spells the drug metoclopramide three different ways. Not only did I see several misspellings, but even drug facts were incorrect. I want the cards to help me learn things I don't know, so if I can't trust them to be correct on what I do know, I would be afraid of what errors I would not even realize were there. Save your money and find a more reliable set of flash cards. These cards are advertised as "Fully revised and updated"...I think maybe they should give it another go.

Maybe good for Step 2/3, but not ideal for Step 1

I just got these for step 1 review because they get an "A" rating in the back of First Aid, but I'm disappointed. They include a number of drugs that I've never heard of before (never covered in my med school pharm class, not mentioned in first aid, not tested by the U-World Q-bank) so I'm doubtful that they will be useful on Step 1. They leave out many other drugs included in First Aid. Also, the main focus of most of the cards is the indications for use, rather than mechanism or toxicity. That may make them useful for step 2, but less so for step 1, which wants you to know MOA and toxicity in detail but generally just wants you to know the disease that they treat (rather than what stage of the disease to use them in, and which drugs provide mortality benefit, etc). As other reviewers have mentioned, they have a lot of type-os, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Many drugs have different pertinent information spread between different cards (toxicity on one, MOA on another) and often the information is contradictory. For instance, two different cards mention Carbemazepine, but the 3 toxicities that they list for it are completely different. This makes studying very frustrating!

In short, I may keep these around for step 2 and 3 study, but I think there are probably more appropriate flashcard sets if you are looking to learn pharmacology for step 1.

Not comprehensive! BEWARE!

I got these cards because first aid 2011 graded these cards as A in their recommended book section. If you read the description they gave out then you would get the impression that these cards are "comprehensive" and all that you needed for the boards. WRONG. You absolutely need to supplement these flashcards with another source. I ended up using Lange's pharmacology cards (which was actually comprehensive and not too much for the boards btw).

The content of these flashcards are presented in a very good way. It's clear, concise and clinically oriented. However, there simply isn't enough cards to cover all the drugs. In fact many board relevant drugs of the same class aren't even listed. I would recommend these cards if you have extra time for pharm and have gone through your other cards.
