Another Max Lucado Winner

My Bible Study has used Max's New Testament series for almost 2 years. He challenges us in ways the other materials we tried did not. His presentation is succinct, indepth, and thought-provoking. These are not feel-good studies. Whether it is a new walk with the Lord or many years in His service, the rubber-meets-the-road, the cattle prod is out, and the way is clearly marked. They can be used by anyone from the 20's through our ages which average the 70's. We are just beginning the first lesson in 1 & 2 Timothy. Already, we can tell that it is of the same high quality we have come to expect. We highly recommend this book and this series for all.

Lucado could do better

First, this commentary is not a critique of Lucado, who I think is a very good author and preacher. For some reason, his in depth style does not seem to come through in these study guides.

This is my own fault as I have already read two of his other study guides and had similar experiences, but I heard him speak shortly before purchasing this and though I'd give him another try.

I like study guides that aren't afraid to ask hard questions about the Bible. There are many passages that are hard to take either because they do not fit within our culture, or there are different ways of interpreting them, or they may seem to go against other parts of the Bible. If those texts come up during the course of the lesson, you can bet that Lucado will skip over them.

The style of his questions seems very heavy on application of the scripture, which is fine and appropriate. However, some of the application questions assume a particular interpretation of the scriptures to which Lucado assumes the reader agrees with or either doesn't bother explaining. Again application questions are not bad, but it would be nice to have questions to guide the reader to dig deeper into the meaning of the text as well.

For example:

1 Timothy 2:12 "I do not permit a woman to teach..." No questions about what Paul meant with that.
1 Timothy 3 There were no questions about Paul leaving women out of service positions

I could go on, but my point is that it is as if Lucado wants to facilitate a more feel good "kum by yah" session with his questions. That said, if that is what you or your group likes, then you will probably like this. If you have used his study guides before and liked them, you will probably like this. However, if you are looking for something more in depth, I am afraid you will be disappointed.

The best HTML5 Canvas Book!

I've read the Core HTML5 Canvas book, the For Dummies HTML5 Canvas book as well as the Canvas spec. This is by-far the best book. The book is very comprehensive and offers good examples. It also takes the time to do the JavaScript right. The book is well organized by topic and does not throw me around like the Core book. It is very in depth unlike the For Dummies book. And it has examples and explanations unlike the official spec.

This is one of the few books that will live on my desk!

Summary

The authors want to present a strong introduction to the HTML5 canvas as well as providing advice, examples, and guided tours through the deeper levels of the canvas. The book is focussed on games because, well, that's why most people want to use canvas! Even so, there is a some very focused material on video/audio/image integration which will also be great for designers.

Reactions

Fantastic job! To be honest, I hate javascript. I chose this book mostly out of curiousity. But the book is great. From start to finish, there is very little space that is not used wisely. Tons of examples, from simple standard introductions to highly instructive, complex HTML5 games. It's also an excellent tool for becoming a better game developer or programmer in general.

Conclusions

If you already know Javascript or jQuery and are interested in games or html5 apps with canvas content, this an excellent book for that.

Maybe it's me, but I didn't get as much out of this book as I expected. I think I read the first 3 chapters and found some helpful information there, but after that the book quickly launched into gaming aspects and I quit reading. Given the content of the book it should have been titled 'Canvas Gaming' or something like that. It's fine that the book is about gaming, but it was so much about gaming it didn't delve into a lot of the aspects about canvas. For example, aspects like mouse coordinates and canvas position, like relative, absolute, static, etc. I had to look aspects like that, and more, on the internet. I expected those aspects to be covered in the book. The book covered canvas basics, then quickly progressed to complex canvas aspects. It went from foundational things straight into gaming. I hoped it would have contained all the intermediate aspects too. Not everyone wants to develop a game. I don't. I need to develop a canvas for the development of image maps and signature capture. Knowing what I now know about the book I would not have purchased it. I don't think I should buy a book on canvas and then need to search the internet for answers to a bunch of canvas aspects not covered. I wanted a book to avoid that. Looking some uncommon aspects up is expected, but not the majority of those I need. And, maybe some of the aspects I need are HTML5 aspects, but they directly affect the use of canvas and need to be coded up to us canvas correctly and fully, so I expect them to be covered. Again, maybe it's just me, but that's my opinion. So, I gave the book 3 stars for - It's Okay.

Clear and Concise Chess Teaching

Mr. Bardwick has the rare gift of truly understanding the mind of a chess beginner,so he can instruct the teacher in building
a solid foundation of the basics of chess. Within this framework
the student can then apply future learning and knowledge for his own benefit.

This is the best,surest,and quickest way for a student to advance his chess ability.

Lessons 5 and 7 are particularly helpful.

This is a superb manual then for the intergration of chess into the lessons of math and life.

excellent job

Todd Bardwick does a very good job writing his first book. I teach chess to elementary kids, and already know most of the material in Todds book. However, he breaks each element of the teaching phase down, chapter by chapter, (todd calls them "lessons," there are 10 total) and he relates them to a standards-based math curriculum. The fun games and exemplars given in the back appendix are excellent. Many books written on teaching chess are not written by good teachers,and most fall flat on their faces.Not this one. Highly recommended. Good job Todd!

The medievael dialogue in this text really makes it, from an aspiring codicologist and manuscript science perspective. Incredibly well-researched and comprehensive discourse on the historical foundations and context for why we read and impose certain genderedness within modern visual information, from fine art to contemporary iconography to secular, everyday communication. Fantastic read; I highly recommend this text!

Interesting! (up to a point)

I have been reading Classen out of academic interest. Mostly because her books deal with areas very few other people seem to touch. I can highly recommend 'Worlds of sense' and `Aroma'. Very, very good books about things you've never thought of.

Color of Angels also is one such book. It deals with 'worldviews' on perceptions of the divine. Especially the first half is very readable, highly enjoyable and refreshing. However, at a certain moment I happened to be sitting in Cambridge, on the shores of the Cam, thinking: Yeah, this is all nice and interesting, but so what? In other words, at a certain moment the book lost its fascination. For me that point was the mediaeval details, however interesting, yet less stimulating.

Please understand me well. This is not a bad book. I think for those interested in the topic it might be an exceptionally well crafted, highly readable, well constructed and substantiated book. For me it was a very enjoyable distraction. Up to a point.

About the Author

eBJohn P. Grant is Professor of Law at Lewis & Clark School of Law in Portland, Oregon. He previously taught at the law schools of Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow, at the last of which he served as dean for a total of 8 years. Professor Grant has acted as a consultant in legal education and in international law. His principal research interests are in general international law, human rights and international criminal law. His recent publications include Lockerbie Trial: A Documentary History (2004, Oceana), International Criminal Law Deskbook (with Barker, 2006, Cavendish), The Harvard Research in International Law: Contemporary Analysis and Appraisal and The Harvard Research in International Law: Original Materials (with Barker, 2007, 2008, Hein).

J. Craig Barker is Professor of Law and Head of Department in the Sussex Law School, University of Sussex, England. He was previously lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Reading. His research is primarily in the field of international law and, in particular, the law of international immunities. He has also written on the subjects of international security, in particular in relation to terrorism; international criminal law; and the relationship between international law and international relations. He is author of three monographs, three edited books and a number of articles in referred journal.
