The work of Avro Manhattan
By Mario Gambino
Perhaps the best way to define Avro Manhattan’s work is to quote the Foreword of another book: Lucien Gregoire's The Vatican Murders: The Life and Death of John Paul I:

"In the 1980s, Avro Manhattan warned of the papal threat to force economic movement toward Marxism in the western world:

`The lack of importance the United States gave to the election of a pope after the death of pro-American Pius XII through the election of John Paul II has become paramount in the thinking of subversive elements in the United States--the lingering evidence too striking to be ignored.

The failure of the United States to influence the election of a pro-American Pope in 1963 was a lesson not to be repeated. The blatant adverse consequence of that blunder enormous, the price astronomical in terms of lost opportunity and the deployment of policies and billions spent by the United States counteracting the subversive actions of Paul VI.

Paul disseminated his pernicious and anti-American principles via encyclicals condemning the basic capitalistic tenets upon which the United States had been founded. He condemned the imperialism of money and private property claiming to give wealth and land to the poor was to give them God's province...

Paul's doctrine `Liberation Theology' took on horrendous roots where the poor were collectively dominant in Latin America, the stability of which was severely threatened. When they reached Central America, military and undercover operations had to be undertaken by the United States to halt Paul's revolution of the poor.

His doctrine `Populorum Progressio'--every man a fair share--fueled the movement toward communism in Europe forcing CIA intervention in Italy where Aldo Moro's `Historic Compromise' threatened to bring about a communist state.

In the spring of 1978, Moro was kidnapped while en route to the House of Representatives on the morning he was scheduled to move communist ministers into control of Italian Parliament. On thus same morning, Moro's closest friend and Paul VI's voice in Italian Parliament (Cardinal Volardo) was found dead in a darkened stairwell in a remote corner of the Vatican Bank.

In the wake of the Moro murder, Paul's sudden and unexplained death was wrapped with subtle speculations and vague rumors. His deterioration had been so extremely unusual whispers concerning the acceleration of his demise circulated.

These suspicions were well justified when his death was met with delight in the headquarters of the CIA and the Pentagon which had labeled him the `Pro-Communist Pope.'

Nevertheless, the providential death of Paul VI gave the CIA the opportunity to carry out its scheme to force election of a pro-American Pope. It joined factions inside the Church backing the Opus Dei anti-Communist candidate Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla...

When the avowed Marxist--Albino Luciani--was elected, it struck a nerve of shattering proportions in the United States. In CIA headquarters the ball began to roll...'" (end of quote of Avro Manhattan)

The last days of Avro Manhattan

As a follow up to his thesis as to the murder of John Paul I in the 1980s, in 1990 a leak in the London Times disclosed that Avro Manhattan was writing a book proving: `The conspiracy that planned the Great Vatican Bank Scandal was the same conspiracy that plotted the Murder of John Paul I and other Marxist leaders in the western world.' The leak claimed Manhattan had proof linking the CIA and Opus Dei to the murders of Aldo Moro, John Paul I and his left-wing counterpart in the Orthodox Church - Metropolitan Nikodim, and a score of others.

Unfortunately, Manhattan died before he was able to publish his book. A week after the leak appeared in the press, Baroness Manhattan returned from Paris to find him dead in their South Shields' home (the reason no biography cites his date of death).

In 2013, Lucien Gregoire wrote The Vatican Murders: The Life and Death of John Paul I. Employing a barrage of testimony of the courts that tried the Vatican Bank Scandal, together with medical and criminology advancements not available to Manhattan at his time--Gregoire proves Avro Manhattan's thesis: The conspiracy that planned the Great Vatican Bank Scandal was the same conspiracy that plotted the Murder of John Paul I.

An historical account of what is the church...
By Luis Carlos Ramos
For those interested in the historical perspective this book is recommended. It tells how the church has amazed fortunes unaccounted to us... I read another book - The history of "the medieval papacy" 20 years back and I noticed the these two books are complementary on information... "Wise men see facts on the historical perspective".

Crystal Healing According To Your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant
By Janet Boyer
"You may already know your birthstone, but you may be surprised to learn that there are several other stones associated with your birthchart." --from the book

Your natal astrological chart is based on the date, time, and place of your birth. Most people are familiar with their Sun sign, which is one of 12 Zodiac symbols. The placement of the Sun in your chart indicates the pathway your soul is following, and each sign is associated with one or more crystals. Using the gemstones associated with your Sun sign can help attract beneficial energies, balance out less desirable tendencies, overcome your karmic inheritance and connect you to the path of your soul.

Each Sun sign is also associated with specific body parts, indicating areas where health challenges may occur. Birthstones can help with these ailments, as well.

While the Sun sign is important, there are two other components of your natal chart that paint the unique portrait that is you: the Moon sign and Ascendant (also know as the Rising Sign). The Moon sign shows how you process and express emotion. Your instinctual nature, unconscious patterns and expectations are also governed by your Moon Sign.

The Ascendant, or Rising Sign, is the "mask" you show to the world. It's the part of your personality that is readily seen to most-a "first impression" if you will. Interestingly, this face you present to the world may be far different than the inner workings of your Sun sign!

The Crystal Zodiac by Judy Hall is an incredibly practical book that explains which gemstones and crystals correlate with each Sun, Moon, and Ascendant placement...and why. So if your Sun is in Scorpio, your Moon is in Aquarius and your Ascendant is in Aries, you'll get a comprehensive overview of the crystals that will aid you on your own unique journey.

For each of the 12 Sun Signs, Hall provides an in-depth look at the corresponding birthstone, abundance stone, ritual crystal, and companion crystals. She then takes you on a journey exploring each Sun sign and how specific crystals help you reach your highest potential, deal with challenges, handle emotions, balance your thinking, link you to your soul's pathway, and heal physical ailments. Hall even provides a special birthday ritual for each Sun sign.

The Crystal Masks section explains the Ascendant and what it reflects in a natal chart. Hall asserts that the Ascendant crystal for each sign is a powerful tool for self-development, bestowing confidence and helping you "own" the qualities of your Ascendant. For the 12 Ascendant placements, Hall explains how each one "meets" the world, the nature of its "mask", and crystal "confidence tricks". She also provides the "fairy godmother" blessings innate in each Ascendant Sign, as well as a wonderful meditation.

For the Moon Sign, Hall outlines the Moon crystal, intuition crystal, and lunar crystals for each of the 12 placements. She explains the significance of your Moon crystal, and the positive qualities of each Moon sign. Because the Moon is associated with emotions, ingrained behavior patterns, and intuition, you'll find out what crystals help with exploring hidden needs, overcoming emotional blocks, developing intuition, and nurturing yourself. Two intriguing aspects to the Moon Sign section is the past life association and a specific ritual. For example, the ritual for the Aries Moon involves a Co-Operation Ritual, Scorpio Moon a Forgiveness Ritual and Cancer Moon a Tie-Cutting Ritual.

Because we each possess a bit of all 12 Signs, Hall provides a full-color Crystal Zodiac Mandala for meditation and contemplation.

The Crystal Zodiac consists of 144 glossy pages featuring dozens of full-color pictures of gemstones and crystals. Although gemstones may often be prettier and pricier, Hall provides the less-expensive correlations for each-assuring the reader that they exhibit the exact same qualities as their counterparts.

Hall writes in an enjoyably lucid style, so this potentially complex subject has been rendered quite graspable for individuals new to crystal healing and astrology. Those familiar with Sun, Moon, and Ascendant signs will be sure to gain additional insights into personality patterns and past life ripples. Crystal healers will love the added dimension that the Zodiac brings to balancing mind, healing the emotions, grounding the body, and expanding the spirit.

An Excellent Investment!
By William W. Duvendack
Judy Hall does excellent work with stones, which most of us know. However, in this book she asserts her skill with astrology as well. Not only are basic Sun sign attributions covered, but she goes into great depth and detail regarding other astrological chart points and stones for them. This is the perfect addition to those that want to use the two systems in tandem for personal growth.

Another GREAT read!
By V. & J. Evans
So I continue to read the series of Blackwood books & the second was better than the first! The first one gave all the background I needed to carry on reading and not have to try to figure out the who or what behind the characters. I really enjoy the direction these books are going & can't wait for the next and the next... Great book!

The greatness continues!

Read this second book in the series in two days and it was as great as the first book (which doesn't always happen!). So sad when it was over as I want to know what happens next! More details on Emmy and her husband came in this book and I felt even more interested in her than before. She is one tough lady!! Can't wait to read the next book in the series. You won't be disappointed in this book or series!

I never thought I could follow a series, but this one has me hooked. I didn't think I would be interested in a romantic story, yet this one has more thriller action than most books I've read in a long time. I am happy that I came across this series and looking forward for more to come.

Edward Lansdale: The Unquiet American, by Cecil B. Currey

The Village Voice called the complex life of U.S. Air Force major general and CIA agent Edward G. Lansdale one of "Technicolor fascination". The maverick military thinker's brilliant counterinsurgency tactics preserved democracy in the Philippines, but his subsequent efforts to create "a broad-based, open society" in Vietnam failed following his return to the United States in 1956. Lansdale later led an undercover organization dedicated to bringing down Fidel Castro. This important biography of the legendary intelligence operative and master of political and psychological warfare is now available as a Brassey's Five-Star Paperback.

From Publishers Weekly
An Air Force officer and CIA operative, Lansdale devised tactics against the communist Huks in the Philippines in the early '50s, masterminded the first free elections there and soon afterward helped Ngo Dinh Diem form his fledgling government in South Vietnam. So much for his triumphs, which made him a legend in the Far East. The second half of this notable biography makes for painful reading, as the author describes Lansdale's struggles in Saigon to prevent the disintegration of the fragile nation he helped establish. Convinced that counterinsurgency must have a social vision as well as military strength, he urged political-psychological programs as opposed to search-and-destroy missions and B-52 raids. Currey does an excellent job of summarizing Lansdale's ideas, arguing that many of them would have been effective. Lansdale's urgent warnings were virtually ignored by the U.S. high command, and he closed out his maverick career collecting soldiers' songs. He died in 1987. Currey wrote Self-Destruction: The Disintegration of the United States Army During the Vietnam Era.

The Scoop about the Legendary American Edward Lansdale in Southeast Asia in the Mid-20th Century
By Ted Marks
If one wanted to dissect the malignancy of American foreign policy in Southeast Asia in the 1950's and 60's, this book about the mysterious Edward Lansdale would be a good place to start. Lansdale was the former CIA/U.S. Air Force officer who was, some say, the model for both the Quiet American and Ugly American in novels by, respectively, Graham Green and Eugene Burdick/William Lederer.

But Lansdale was hardly an Ugly American (he was by nature a quiet man) and, in any event, identifying Lansdale with a fictional stereotype hardly does him justice. But Lansdale does get his share of justice from Cecil B. Currey, the author of EDWARD LANSDALE: the UNQUIET AMERICAN.

Currey depicts Lansdale as a sophisticated intelligence agent who developed unconventional theories about how to fight communism. Alas, while Lansdale was successful in both the Philippines and Vietnam, his theories never did receive the proper attention, or respect, from the mainstream foreign policy establishment in Washington under the presidencies of Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon all of whom effectively ignored his advice on how to deal with the insurgency in Vietnam.

Early in his career, Lansdale was an advertising man who had a sophisticated understanding of how and why people reacted to any given product. One of his successful advertising accounts was with Levi Strauss who has seeking to go national with their blue jeans. The advertising skills Lansdale learned in the 1930's served as a good basis for the psy-war operations he developed later in his intelligence career.

When World War II broke out, and Lansdale managed to get an Army commission that gave him entrée into the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency. Details of Lansdale's OSS service were murky, but it involved work on both China and the Philippines. After the war, Lansdale had the chance to switch his Army commission to that of the fledgling U.S. Air Force, and that was to be his cover for the rest of his career as a behind the scenes political agent working for both the CIA and the U.S. State Department.

That career focused on two key nations in Southeast Asia: the Philippines and Vietnam. In the 1950's Lansdale developed counter-insurgency tactics that successfully put down the HUK rebellion in the Philippines. Afterwards, Lansdale was a key player in the rise of Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay.

After Magsaysay was elected President, Lansdale was sent to Vietnam by then Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to replicate his success in the Philippines. Lansdale worked closely with South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem as he secured his power in the aftermath of the 1954 Geneva Convention accord on Vietnam. But Diem was a difficult leader who was not completely receptive to Lansdale's advice to win the hearts of his people (as Magsaysay did in the Philippines). As pressures from North Vietnam increased, and John F. Kennedy ascended to the Presidency, the situation in Vietnam was deteriorating, in part due to Diem's intransigence to Lansdale's recommendations.

Lansdale's efforts in Vietnam were focused on pacification of the South Vietnamese countryside, but Diem never did wholeheartedly endorse that strategy. While Lansdale remained a key adviser to Diem, he began to lose his grip on the situation in Saigon, especially with the rambunctious foreign policy establishment in Washington. The result was that Diem was assassinated, with the encouragement of JFK's advisors, and South Vietnam began to travel down a rocky road that ultimately led to its defeat in 1975. It didn't help matters that JFK himself was assassinated only weeks after Diem was murdered.

Once Lyndon Johnson assumed the presidency, the American policy in Southeast Asia went off the rails. Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara (never a fan of Lansdale) began the massive build-up of American troops as the U.S. took control of the war. The South Vietnamese not only lost interest in defending their nation, corruption took hold as dishonest South Vietnamese officers developed phantom troops rolls and pocketed their salaries. The black market in American goods that were sent to support U.S. troops flourished. In that sort of an environment, North Vietnam strengthened its grip on the population in South Vietnam.

Lansdale recognized this and reported it to his superiors (by this time he had formally cut his ties with the CIA and was acting as a special assistant to the U.S. ambassador in Saigon), and he never did give up his efforts towards pacification. But as the situation deteriorated, Lansdale lost touch with the key policy makers in Washington and after the 1968 Tet Offensive, Lansdale's career was for all intents and purposes was over. He ultimately returned to Washington and lived a quiet life until his death in 1987.

Currey's saga of Lansdale's frustration represents a reasonably accurate description of the collapse of the American effort in Southeast Asia. In his remaining years, Lansdale lectured frequently and stayed in occasional contact with leading figures. In 1984, Richard Nixon asked him to write down thoughts on modern warfare. Lansdale responded:

"Conventional operations are more apt to widen the problem or to be more cosmetic than a cure," Lansdale wrote to Nixon. "...Essentially, in a revolutionary `people's' war, the people of the country actually constitute the true battleground of the war. Whoever wins them wins the war. Unless a government is made up `of the people, by the people and for the people,' it is vulnerable...Native leaders have to win the war. We can't do it for them. We can advise on the selection of the best native leaders for the fight and help make their leadership effective while behaving as helpful friends."

Currey then goes on to boil down all of Lansdale's writings and speeches to eight points of essential warfare. They are too lengthy too enumerate here, but they are a very valuable summary of Lansdale's principals of unconventional warfare, and should be studied at the Army and Navy war colleges.

In the final analysis, one has to consider Lansdale a bit of an odd, even flawed personality. He had an enormously successful career as a counterinsurgency expert. But he never completely fulfilled himself, partly because he was inept at American politics. Part of his problem was that he was way out of the mainstream of the defense and foreign policy establishment at the Pentagon and Foggy Bottom, and as such, no one took him seriously. He had hoped that he would be named ambassador to the Philippines or Vietnam, but he never stood a chance at such a high ranking appointment, because the movers and shakers in Washington considered him a bit of a counterinsurgency freak in an Air Force uniform. But his clients in the Philippines and Vietnam didn't view him in that light, and the sorry conclusion has to be made that Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon made a grievous mistake in not elevating Lansdale to a much higher, policy making position in the inner sanctums of the Washington power establishment. If they had, the outcome of the Vietnam War might have been far different than the ignominious American evacuation of both Phnom Penh and Saigon in 1975 when the war in Indochina ended in a North Vietnamese victory.

Finally, A Fair Treatment of a Fascinating Life!
By Q. Publius
William Colby, the late Director of Central Intelligence, rated Edward Lansdale as one of the ten greatest spies in modern history. Edward Geary Lansdale was indeed a most unusual character: regarded as a maverick by many in the U.S. Defense and State Departments, yet greatly appreciated and even loved by nationals of the countries in which he spent much of his career: the Philippines and South Vietnam. Rising to the rank of major general in the Air Force, Lansdale worked his entire career in either military intelligence, psychological warfare, or special operations, with the O.S.S., C.I.A., and DoD. Lansdale's most successful efforts were in the Phillipines in the late 40's and early 50's, helping defeat the communist insurgents (Huks) and establish democratic reforms. In "Bright Shining Lie" Neil Sheehan called Lansdale the "father of South Vietnam," and this is largely true. But despite two long assignments in country (1954-57 and 1965-68) not even the legendary Lansdale could stabilize South Vietnam, largely because senior U.S. leaders would not support his ideas. Lansdale was against the predominant U.S. "big battle" strategy, but rather believed the fight was a "people's war" which required working with villagers to help them defend themselves. This is the strategy Andrew Krepenivich espoused in "The Army and Vietnam." Lansdale believed that helping nationals fight a people's war was a form of brotherly love, inspired by the Founding Fathers' concepts of respect for the rights of individuals. He felt an important way to learn Asians' culture was to learn their folk songs (always playing along on his harmonica) and to let them know that Americans accepted them as equals. In the long anti-Vietnam period after U.S. withdrawal in 1973, Lansdale has often been unfairly maligned. This book finally gives him a fair treatment, while pointing out criticisms from both the left and the right. Lansdale is a legend, and with good reason. Few people's lives involve the amount of intrigue similar to, for example, the character Reilly, "Ace of Spies," who worked for British intelligence. To learn about the noble ideals behind American Cold War foreign policy (despite often tragic miscalculations), the fascinating life of Edward Geary Lansdale is an enlightening tale.

Excellent book on advising, counter-insurgency, and psychological operations in the 40's, 50's, and 60's
By Tweeter00801
Excellent book about a psychological warfare and counter-insurgency expert when there really was no position in DoD for that. It is amazing as the undercurrent of the book is really about advising host nation counterparts, as he did, by using the exact principles we've clearly defined today. He was a true innovator and thinker was proved invaluable until no one would listen to him in the late 50s in Vietnam. Then you see a frustrated man trying to gracefully bow out but cannot because of duty.

Not as Comprehensive as the Oxford World Classics _Casting The Runes_
By Winter's Icy Grip
I realize that no one will probably put out a book to rival the amazing and beautiful _A Pleasing Terror_ put out by Ash-Tree Press several years ago, but Amazon's description of _Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories : The Complete Ghost Stories of M. R. James, Volume 1_ (Penguin Classics) made it out to sound much better than it actually is, since it was listed at being 400 pages long, but is in reality a far slimmer tome of 288 pages. Very disappointing.

The book does have a nice sized font, but suffers from a thin cover (albeit with a great cover illustration), and a bit floppy overall.

The 15 stories included are among the best ghost stories ever written. But with so many book containing the works of M. R. James, I try to be a bit more discerning. This edition is brief and of decent publishing standards.

Stories Awesome: Annotation Lame!
By Severian
The stories of Mr. James are above reproach; unique in English literature for being subtle and creepy at the same time and shaped by James' knowledge of medieval history, English history, and the occult. The question for the reader is whether they want to pony up [...] for the Penguin annotated editions of James' tales, as the James repertoire is in the public domain and you could read many of these stories for free on the internet and / or get a [...] copy of the "Collected Ghost Stories" from Wordsworth Press and get 30 out of 33 of the stories featured in the two combined Penguin volumes. So the question then is are Joshi's notes and intros worth about [...]?

S.T. Joshi is an immensely gifted editor and critic. His studies of the "Weird Tale" are modern classics in the field, and the immense work he has put into his Lovecraft bio and his annotated Lovecraft volumes are a paradigm. There is no doubt that if Mr. Joshi put the full focus of his attention on working with James' material that he could have easily justified the purchase price for these books. Unfortunately, Joshi, for whatever reasons, just went through the motions here and produced a fairly pedestrian work of annotation and criticism to accompany the text.

Joshi's annotated Lovecraft or annotated Blackwood (also available from Penguin) are superb works of annotation - each story has copious notes explaining themes and background of the work at hand. In approaching James though, Joshi appears dutiful at best or even bored. Many tales here have less than half a dozen bland notes, and many of the notes are nothing more than scutwork, translations and nutshell bios of historical figure mentioned.

This would be fine if James needed no annotation. (But then why buy these books at all?) The true issue is that James' work would indeed benefit from some first grade notes. For instance "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" is a story involving an ambitious clergyman who schemes to murder his inconvenient predecessor who is holding him from a promotion. The career of the sinister cleric has many subtle details that point up James' low opinion of him based on his theology and clerical administration policies.

For a modern reader who is not fully aware of Episcopalian intra-denominational quarrels in the late 19th Century, knowing this info will add a new level of depth and interest to the story. Instead, Joshi tells us none of this and simply translates a few Latin phrases and fleshes out a few Biblical citations, something the ordinary reader with internet access could do on their own with a [...] copy of the stories. In comparison, Joshi's notes in his annotated Lovecraft for "Herbert West Reanimator" (one of the slightest and most pulpy of fictions in the HPL body of work) are far more detailed, engaging, and affectionate.

Now you might say "well who cares about Episcopalian church governance squabbles of the 19th Century?" and indeed the Barchester story works very well even if the reader knows none of the "extrinsic" detail. But yet the entire point of an annotated edition is to add maximum depth and detail to a story for those interested in pursuing such a level of analysis. To provide a minimalist annotation defeats the entire purpose of the endeavor, as the reader may be better served by dispensing with the slight commentary offered and simply reading the work in question cheaply or for free while doing their own cursory research as needed for historical figures, translations, etc.

The problem may be that Joshi is well-known for his postulate that a Christian perspective is incompatible with effective horror writing. Joshi is a rather strident atheist and feels that atheism and similar godless perspective make for the most creative and interesting horror. I see his point, but yet the existence of effective horror by pious men like Hawthorne and Montague Rhodes James acts as a counterpoint to Joshi's thesis. This is not to say that Joshi sets out to sabotage James with lame notes - rather it perhaps shows why Joshi viewed this particular exercise as a bore and a task rather than a pleasure.

I do not wish to psychoanalyze the editor too much; my theory above may be entirely wrong. However, the heart of the matter is that if we compare Joshi's notes and analyses on the stories of the pantheistic Blackwood, the existensialist Lovecraft, or the atheist Ligotti, we see that he has done a much better job than here. Maybe this is due to the fact that he finds these others more personally simpatico, or perhaps he simply finds detailed textual analysis of James to be uninteresting.

In any case, the ultimate answer to the question of whether a reader should purchase these two volumes of James' ghost stories is probably not. The much cheaper Wordsworth edition (though less aesthetically pleasing) will offer all the pleasures of the original text (or 90% of them anyway), the somewhat cheaper Oxford World Classics Edition though offering only 20 or so tales has a far better intro and notes by Michael Cox, and for the ultimate discount, most of these tales are in the public domain and can be tracked down and read for free over the internet. Joshi, though ordinarily adding enough value to an annotated edition to justify a higher price, has fallen down on the job here and given us a bare-bones minimal effort annotation effort.

Academic and Exciting Ghost Stories
By Dave
M.R. James' scholarship in the areas of medieval manuscripts and church history manifest themselves in appreciable ways throughout his many stories. The stories range from definitively supernatural (Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book) to those that really allow you to question the reality of the events described ("'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You My Lad'"). James has a wonderful grasp of just how much background story is necessary to create story and character depth, while at the same time establishing a mood conducive to truly spooky and chilling revelations.

Jame's training and knowledge allow him to tap into real history and geography, as well as invent things which seem utterly plausible - the Penguin notes are helpful in circumventing extensive research to determine whether a place is real or not, and what historical relevance there might be for the story. However, those not interested in this may grow tired of the notes and those pursuing studies will find the recommended reading of far more pertinence.

This is a nice, portable introduction to M.R. James' ghost stories and is highly recommended to those that are interested in the gothic and to anyone who enjoys a good short story.
