Based on his commentaries during the Ring Cycle's presentation on four consecutive April weekends in 1989, the book takes its title from C.S. Lewis's remarks upon first seeing Arthur Rackham's illustrations for the Cycle: "The sky had turned round. . . . Pure Northerness engulfed me." In a concise, beautifully shaped style, Lee summarizes the plot and analyzes each opera musically and psychologically while also examining the mythological roots and the meaning this work can hold for today's audience. The result is a readable critical essay that celebrates its subject and makes one eager to hear the operas. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries with strong music collections.

M. Owen Lee, CSB, is a Catholic priest and Professor Emeritus of Classics at St. Michael's College, University of Toronto. He is a commentator for the Texaco Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts and the author of a number of books on opera, including A Season of Opera: From Orpheus to Ariadne (UTP 1998) and Wagner: The Terrible Man and His Truthful Art (UTP 199).

Brief but interesting and insightful

Is there a better writer on opera today than Father Owen Lee? This book provides five essays on The Ring (an introduction plus an essay on each individual Ring opera) which are brief (about 15-20 pages each) but always interesting and insightful. For those new to the Ring, who want to get an idea of "what all the fuss is about" without wading though hundreds of pages of analysis, this book is indispensible. And even for those who come to it with a wealth of knowledge, this book will probably provide a few new insights.

exquisitely succinct interpretation and introduction....

to one of the most multi-layered works of art in existence.

I have wanted to see this opera series for over 20 years, ever since I saw an opera properly prepared by a Wagner fanatic. Finally, I was in a place where I could, so I turned to the various preparations that I could find.

This short book was indisputably one of the best, and it doesn't shy from bold pronouncements and interpretations. Lee is a classical scholar of great learning and brings together a huge range of sources in this 100plus-page book.

First, he gives a synopsis. Then, he interprets it, with full awareness that the reader may disgree. While the content is covered by other reviewers here, I wanted to say that this added immensely to my experience of this uniquely complex work of near-modern art. Plus, it is aimed that at erudite admirers, but to those (like me) desperate for an anchor as I approach the unique intensity of Wagner.

While it relies a bit too heavily on depth psychology, which places this interpretation at a certain time, it is never dogmatic and addresses many of the other philosophical ideas that underlie it. This is my only caveat. Truly great works of art are re-interpreted by every age, and this one will be too. In addition, it cannot be the only source one approaches - you need to listen to the music as well, so this is one supplement.

HELP with the SUTTON PLACE story [SPOILER]....>

I have Cheever's ''short stories'' book after seeing the film again after decades, just to read Swimmer, and read 2 more to see if he always leaves people dangling... and IN '''Sutton Place story''', it also baffled me, if anyone's read that. I tried to mark the stories in table of contents that revolved around manhattan since that's my life and what i relate to, but ""SPOILER ALERT""... that one I do not know who ""Martha""is who gave her the bread, nor when there was even bread, but I think the name Martha is more the point, not the bread. Can anyone explain? I read a 3rd '''the sorrows of gin''', i think the next one after sutton place, only because it was very short, but it was not open ended, luckily, having hoped all of his works were not like that, which I do find too frustrating... I love things that make us ''THINK'' but not open ended. Again.....Could anyone explain the sutton place one, and MARTHA? Also there were so MANY unneccessary things in that sutton story, it was a total waste of reading, then hit with that Martha thing as the last words, unless I missed something, and the name marth WAS mentioned before through that story, if so couldin't have been more than once, or i'd have remembered it. So annoying and no time to trace back for the name. HELP. OH, and by the way... CHEEVER is IN his film ''The Swimmer'' at the very FIRST pool party, in case not everyone knows. He is in black pants and white shirt and tie shaking "Ned's" hand later in that same pool scene, with his wife Marge Champion coming out few minutes later, they are taking a plane that day. And "Ned" makes fun of his pouch tummy, that's Cheever. lol

I initially got the free sample of this book to see if I would like it and the first story was simply wonderful so I had to have the whole book. I really enjoyed the whole book, it is actually quite long and a good deal for the money to have so many classically American short stories. The only thing is that many of the subsequent stories are rather melancholy and I have had to read them only when in a good mood because they really got me down if I was not feeling really good before I read them. Sometimes I actually had to stop reading because they affected me so much. This book is quite powerful and though I really enjoyed that, I am not sure if I could or would want to read it again.

It is most appropriate that the entire body of Cheever's short stories should be brought together in one place. I bought this on the strength of one of these stories, "The Swimmer," the film version of which has enthralled me for years but which I had, somehow, never gotten round to reading.

Thematically speaking, Cheever bears a striking resemblance to F Scott Fitzgerald in his focus on a specific socioeconomic group in a specific location: the middle-to-upper-middle class in New York City and its suburbs. A few of his stories take place, at least in part, in Italy, most particularly Rome, but even in these stories the people seem to be displaced New Yorkers.

Most of Cheever's people either have money or are at least not struggling financially in any real sense. They are usually successfully married, but it is striking how often "successfully married" does not mean "happily married."

The overwhelming theme of many of these stories appears to be simple boredom. A man has a charming and gracious wife whom he loves and who loves him, yet he has an affair with another woman simply because the opportunity arises. This happens in a good many of the stories in this collection. At the end of the day, we are reading about people who by all accounts should be happy with their lives, but for reasons even they themselves do not know, they are not. Or they are, but the monotony of daily life has blinded them to it.

Some of the stories in here are real knockouts: "The Swimmer," the tale that got me to buy this collection, tells the tale of a man on a sort of reverse Odyssey, suburban style, which ends abruptly, leaving the reader baffled as to what has happened to him. Yet this is perhaps the best story in the entire collection.

There are also a handful of stories that have a certain otherworldly quality to them. A couple of them have strong echoes of Kurt Vonnegut. Whether Cheever was influenced by Vonnegut or vice versa I do not know, but if he was, I'm afraid he was reaching; the kind of fantasy world that Vonnegut was so comfortable in is not really Cheever's territory.

Reading all these tales in one collection produces a certain feeling of monotony; a lot of them are merely variations on the same theme, and a few of them are basically the same story told using different names and places.

That being said, it is a territory that Cheever knew well; the stories are all worthy of your time, and a few of them are absolute stunners.

As a collection, it has some flaws (monotony being the most prominent of these), but this is still an essential collection for anyone who enjoys good short stories.

About the Author

Lauren McCarthy is an artist and programmer based in Brooklyn, NY. She is full-time faculty at NYU ITP, and recently a resident at CMU STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and Eyebeam. She holds an MFA from UCLA and a BS Computer Science and BS Art and Design from MIT. Her work explores the structures and systems of social interactions, identity, and self-representation, and the potential for technology to mediate, manipulate, and evolve these interactions. She is fascinated by the slightly uncomfortable moments when patterns are shifted, expectations are broken, and participants become aware of the system.

At Sosolimited and Small Design Firm, Lauren has worked on installations for the London Eye, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, IBM, US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello. She has also worked at Oblong Industries, Continuum and the MIT Media Lab.

Her artwork has been shown in a variety of contexts, including the Ars Electronica Center, Conflux Festival, SIGGRAPH, LACMA, the Japan Media Arts Festival, Share Festival, File Festival, the WIRED Store, and probably to you without you knowing it at some point while interacting with her.

Casey Reas is a professor in the Department of Design Media Arts at UCLA and a graduate of the MIT Media Laboratory. Reas' software has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries in the United States, Europe, and Asia. With Ben Fry, he co-founded Processing in 2001. He is the co-author of Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists (2007) and Form+Code in Design, Art, and Architecture (2010). Ben Fry has a doctorate from the MIT Media Laboratory and was the 2006-2007 Nierenberg Chair of Design for the Carnegie Mellon School of Design. He worked with Casey Reas to develop Processing, which won a Golden Nica from the Prix Ars Electronica in 2005. Ben's work has received a New Media Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation, and been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, Ars Electronica, the 2002 Whitney Biennial, and the 2003 Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.

Hands-on and Accessible: Go Create

Well-written overview of P5.js for the Modern Web, with fine illustrations and clear-cut examples. Coming from Processing a while back, I found the transition logical and was able to port some ancient sketches with relatively minor tweaks. Aside from the staggering options afforded by this interpretation of Processing, the book covers difficult programmatic concepts that are easier to understand in a visual context.

This book is great for people who want to learn p5.js, which is great for students and kids trying to learn web-development. I bought this for someone who is in the early stages of learning javascript and thought it would be a nice way to get them started, and it was. If you want to teach someone javascript this is a nice place to start, despite the fact that it basically turns javascript into "processing" which is arduino's programming language.

All in all, really easy to follow, we had a little game going on in minutes.

contemporary guardian-ward romance

Heroine has been in love with her guardian Hero since she was 15 & set out to make him notice her as a woman since she became his ward at 17. Unfortunately he didn't see her as a potential lover & even sent his various girlfriends-of-the-moment to vacation with her instead of taking him herself. The one time he did take her himself ended up with heroine declaring her love for him & proved to be embarrassing for both of them. Now at age 19 heroine is resigned that Hero would never see her as a lover. She wants to be independent from him now instead of waiting 2 more years before she has full legal control of her inheritance. But Hero doesn't think she's capable of protecting herself from fortune hunters so he proposes a marriage of convenience until she's 21. Heroine takes advantage of their temporary marriage & tries to make him love her. Her plan seems to work especially when Hero finally makes love to her. But the reappearance of Hero's old girlfriend instills doubt re: the permanence of their marriage.

Heroine may sound like a doormat but she wasn't. She just knew what she wanted & went for it. It showcased her inner strength (her stubbornness, resilience, & positive view of problems) to not be discouraged by Hero's lack of interest in her as a lover for the 2 years she lived with him as his ward & the 1st year of their marriage. She wasn't self-pitying. When she gave her best shot at something & it didn't work out, she moved on to her next plan.

I liked that we get both Hero & heroine's POVs. I could clearly see where their misunderstandings were & rooted for them to figure them out at some point. I liked that Hero chose to be celibate during the 2nd year as heroine's guardian b/c he was done with his casual-sex lifestyle. He didn't stray during their 1st year of their celibate marriage either. Once he realized he was in love with her, he tried his best to win her love. He was a sweetheart of an alpha Hero.

Just Ok!

So, I chose this book because it had a "marriage of convenience" storyline.

I must say that I found the book to be just ok.

I first felt sorry for the female character, because she had lost her parents at a young age and was stuck with a grandparent that was overly critical about any and everything she did, and just really didn't want her around, and therefore, requested that the make character take over the raising of the girl as a teenager. But then as the story went on (years passing) the female character really got on my nerves with all the unnecessary bad behavior, whining, and misunderstood communication with the male character.

With the male character I first applauded him for taking on the care of the female character, and again as time when on, I didn't quite understand how he could misunderstand some of her actions, as well as be bad with his communication, considering he was a successful business man.

As I said above this book was in my opinion just ok.
