Clearly targeted to a very specific audience

This is not what I was looking for. This is a book for young Americans, Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Kiwis planning to do a Gap Year. It is targeted to young people who do not have much experience traveling independently. Much of the information is useful to the nationalities above, but not to people from other countries. If you have already traveled internationally on your own then I don't think the book will be of much use. I am planning a round-the-world trip and I thought the book will focus more on specific topics related to long-term travel (getting visas as you travel, detailed country-by-country travel costs, safety, health and risks specific to certain regions, etc.). Lonely Planet have done a good job here but I have found little information in this book that I hadn't found either on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree forum or in travel websites such as Wikitravel.

So, buy this book if you are 18-19 and about to take a Gap Year or about to travel internationally on your own for the first time (and if you come from the UK or its offshoots). Otherwise perhaps you should look elsewhere.
Much of the book is devoted to really basic travel information that's readily available elsewhere. In contrast, there is not much in the way of travel advice for long-term travelers are scarce. I love Lonely Planet and am an avid consumer of their products, but this is by far the least useful LP book that I've bought. But some of the people who commented on this review have found this book very useful so it depends on your demographics.

Since the lovers are often apart, the book is as much a personal diary cum colorful travelogue (during this time Hacker commutes with her young daughter between Manhattan's Upper West Side, Paris and Venice) as it is an account of lust, ecstasy, yearning, jealousy and betrayal. These sonnets are graphic, colloquial and immediate; Hacker's command of the straitening, fixed form, which often seems archaic and empty when used by other poets, is a stunning achievement.

This lengthy sequence of formal, rhymed sonnets laced with villanelles chronicles an obsessive lesbian love affair with a direct, colloquial, fleshly passion ("We'll do just fine when we can jam together/the necessary parts"). Against the chic scenery of Paris, Manhattan, and Provincetown, Hacker recounts states of separation and sexual longing focused so tightly on the beloved that the whirl of cafes, bars, and shopping sprees could not seem more superfluous. A Masterpiece of Desire and Sex, Love and Loss

Sophistocated and exact, Marilyn Hacker is a poet's poet. She is a formalist who still believs in the power of sonnets, a writer of astounding intellect and superb taste who, like Wallace Stevens, gives you the feeling she's intensely alive even in contemplation. This book, with the poems all set in New York, is a tour de force of modern poetry: a novel in sonnets, each sonnet connecting to the one before it and to the one that follows. It recounts the stormy love affair between the poet and her wayward muse, a much younger woman. The language is gorgeous. The story is romantic, gritty and quotidian, all in the right places. The details fix you in place and time: upscale New York life, late 20th century. These poems take you through the full range of emotion, but mostly they're very, very sexy. The subject may be lesbian love but no lover can fail to identify with the joy and ache and longing--and yes, even with the sex. A perfect Valentine's Day gift. A total masterpiece.

Life-Changing, Sexy, Alive...

A pregnant pause between word three and four of one of these sonnets changed my life. Hacker writes an accessible, witty, beautiful, tender, sexy masterpiece (a novel, really) which has become, since its pub date, a folk rite-of-passage for many readers (even non-poetry lovers), a pole-raising standard for other poets, and the source for many phrases worth remembering: from "age is not the muddle of the matter" to the rhyming of "fit of pique" with "geste heroique." This is a page-turning classic -- erudite, lyrical, and peopled by women one would want to know. A smart person's tour de force!

Stepping carefully through old relations

Marilyn Hacker through her poetry describes her life with her lover, both in New York and Paris. She, being older, talks about insecurities and the torture of being away from the one you love. From the first meeting to the phone call goodbye, Marilyn describes the appropriate lust over another person. This poetry is amazing.

About the Author
Simon LeVay, Ph.D. is a British-born neuroscientist turned science writer and teacher. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and has taught at Harvard, the University of California, and Stanford University, USA. LeVay has authored over 40 scientific studies; the best known of these is a 1991 report in Science that described a difference in brain structure between heterosexual and homosexual men. He is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including Gay, Straight, and the Reason Why: The Science of Sexual Orientation (Oxford University Press, 2011), and a historical novel, The Donation of Constantine (Lambourn Books, 2013). Janice Baldwin, Ph.D. and John Baldwin, Ph.D. are sociologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. They have been collaborators in numerous studies and coauthored many articles in the area of sexuality and sex education, as well as the textbook Behavior Principles in Everyday Life (Prentice Hall), now in its fourth edition. The Baldwins co-teach an undergraduate Human Sexuality course that is regularly voted Best Course at UCSB. They also teach two advanced seminar courses on the same topic, one of which has created a sex information website, SexInfoOnline (SexInfoOnline.com). The Baldwins have been named Best Professors on several occasions.

I was very disappointed with the quality of the book when I opened it. It didn't seem new to me because there is a crease on the upper right corner of the book's cover. I guess it is because the protection was pretty poor so it got damaged on the way.
