About the Author
Coming from a long line of authors (including George Mellinger, who wrote several bestselling Osprey titles) that belonged to the Twin Cities Aero Historians organisation, John Stanaway has written more than 20 books and scores of articles. A USAF veteran with an Arc Light temporary duty assignment to his name from the Vietnam War, Stanaway and his wife have travelled the entire breadth of the United States from California to their present location in Zanesville, Ohio, with their border terrier "Gloster Gladiator" and black Labrador/terrier mix "Bristol Beaufighter." The author lives in Zanesville, OH.

Lightning Tales!

Thus far Osprey has covered the exploits of P-38 aces/units in a number of titles: P-38 LIGHTNING ACES OF THE PACIFIC AND CBI, P-38 LIGHTNING ACES OF THE ETO/MTO, P-38 ACES OF THE 82ND FIGHTER GROUP, 475TH FIGHTER GROUP, etc. John Stanaway recounts the P-38 aces story but in a chronological narrative in P-38 LIGHTNING ACES, 1942-43. A 2014 Osprey release, Stanaway's book is #120 in their AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series.

After a brief introduction to 'Lockheed's Hot Rod,' Stanway relates P-38 combat ops in the Pacific, CBI, MTO and ETO. When flown by skilled pilots like Danny Roberts, Murray Shubin, Dick Bong, John Mitchell, Bob Westbrook, John O'Neill, Bill Sloan, Jack Ilfrey and Tom McGuire, the P-38 spelled trouble for their German, Japanese and Italian opponents as borne out by Stanaway's exciting narative. The text is complimented by dozens of photographs of pilots and Lightnings along with 13 pages of gorgeous color profiles including three pages of P-38 nose art by Chris Davey.

Since the P-38 story has been told many times, much of the material and pix in P-38 LIGHTNING ACES, 1942-43 will be familiar to long-time Lightning buffs. However, as a stand-alone chronicle of early-war P-38 ops, Stanaway's book makes for entertaining reading. Recommended.

The dawn of the P-38

The OSPREY's AIRCRAF OF THE ACES series has now reached the 120th title and is more lively than ever.
Since the beginning Author Peter Stanaway hits the target of telling a very interesting and faceted story.
He underlines the high value of innovation enclosed in the P-38 LIGHTNING and its qualities, particularly the incredible range and the highly destructive power of its armament. The book treats the P-38's American aces fighting since the beginning to 1943 in all operational theatres, during which they operated the E, F, G and H variants.
Notwithstanding some teething troubles of these models, 60 USAAF pilots (including the "legends of the air" Tom Mc Guire and Dick Bong) became aces, courtesy to the "fork tailed devil".
The chapters are developing through the years, starting from the Pacific TO, tracing the hard fighting in the skies of Rabaul, Guadalcanal and New Guinea. Very well written is the chapter devoted to the bold "Vengeance" operation, the interception and downing of the Japanese plane that was carrying Adm. Yamamoto.
The P-38 saw other first line fighting in Burma, China and India and also here was successful, even against the effective Nakajima Ki-44 "Tojo".
However the North Africa and Mediterranean fronts were quite problematic.
There the USAAF pilots had to fight against the well trained and resolute Italian and German pilots, particularly the veteran ones at the controls of the superb Italian MC.202s and German Bf. 109Gs. For this reason the USAAF's victories were mainly based on the slow and vulnerable Junkers Ju.87 Stuka dive bombers.
A not so known and peculiar anecdote told by the Author is that the turbocharged Allison engines of the P-38 induced false victories reports: due to the vigorous backfires after a full throttle acceleration, the P-38 left dense and black trail of smokes and flames, very deceptive for an hit target.
The last chapter describes the P-38 debut in the "Mighty 8th" ranks. This was the most critical theatre, not only for the ability of the Lufwaffe's "Experten" pilots but especially for the ineffective USAAF tactics, quickly revised on the basis of the disappointing results.
A wonderful integration to the book is the collection of the Davey's profiles.
These 30 work of art and the related nose arts are all drawn with the aerograph (Davey is one of the last artists still linked to this beautiful and skill requiring technique), a technique perfectly suited to the WW II camouflages.

For any aviation enthusiast - especially one who is a fan of the P-38 Lightning as I am - this is a book that provides a rich and compelling account of the airplane's combat record in the Pacific, the China-Burma-India Theater, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe during 1942 and 1943. What's more: the photos and art work are top quality and show the P-38 to fine effect. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK.

Michael describes that long night - with Aboriginal trackers springing to their aid to search, and the head ranger who had agonized for three months previous about the troublesome dingoes in the camping areas. He describes in detail the heartache of the first inquest at Ayers Rock - the first to be broadcast live - which declared that the dingo had taken the baby, and then the turnaround, when he and his wife were charged with suspected murder. Michael describes his life in the painful and horrendous lead up to the arrest and persecution of his wife Lindy and her wrongful imprisonment for the murder of her own child in the 'trial of the century'. He takes the reader through their ordeal of the following inquests, the tragic breakup of their marriage. When an English tourist fell off the rock the search led to the discovery of the 'matinee jacket' in a dingo lair. The news led to Lindy's release 'on compassionate grounds' and yet another inquiry. All of these events are described, as Michael lived in the unrelenting glare of the media, whose opinion and fostering of rumours added to the impression of the public of Michael and his family. Worth the Read

I received "Heart of Stone" as a gift from a friend living in Australia. I live in the United States, and was a high school student in Montana when the central events discussed in this book took place. I had no prior knowledge of the case. But for receiving the book as a gift, it is unlikely I would have read it. But, having read "Heart of Stone," I'm glad I did, although to some degree it was an effort. The book will not be for everyone, but I will briefly explain what you will find, and my impressions.

The complete book title is: "Heart of Stone: Justice for Azaria." Azaria Chamberlain tragically lost her life in 1980 at Ayers Rock (now called Uluru), Australia when Azaria was only two months old. She disappeared from her tent, and her body was never found. The ensuing mystery of what happened to Azaria, and the surrounding legal proceedings, galvanized a nation. The case is now a part of Australian culture. "Heart of Stone" is the personal memoir of Michael Chamberlain, the father of Azaria.

Did a dingo drag away Azaria from a tent and kill her, or did some form of human intervention exist? In 1982, a jury found Michael Chamberlain's wife, Lindy Chamberlain, guilty of murder, and Michael Chamberlain was pronounced guilty of being an accessory after the fact. This book focuses primarily on the many surrounding legal proceedings, evidence used, and associated intense media scrutiny. In 2012 at a fourth coroner's inquest, the coroner found that Azaria was taken and killed by a dingo, and the death certificate was changed accordingly (these findings were issued after the book was published).

Michael Chamberlain contends that his wife Lindy should never have been found guilty of murdering Azaria (or he found guilty of being an after the fact accessory). Mr. Chamberlain argues that the evidence simply did not support the jury decision, and the reason for the guilty verdict was a combination of unfair media coverage, bias and prejudice by the Northern Territory, and fundamentally flawed forensic evidence (among other issues).

The book is presented largely in chronological order. The major waypoints are: four inquests (two preliminary coroner inquiries between 1980-1982, and two later coroner inquiries in 1995 and 2012), a court trial, an appeal to a High Court of Appeal and then to the High Court, Royal Commission proceedings (a special commission appointed by the federal/commonwealth government), and an appeal to the Northern Territory Criminal Court of Appeal (Australia has six states, and ten territories--the events here took place in the Northern Territory). Each legal proceeding is discussed and analyzed. Contemporaneous quotations or comments are often provided from newspapers or other sources. The book contains a helpful chronology, a detailed glossary of people and terms, and an index. Three sets of color photos are included, at least in the hard copy version.

Between the general bookends of the legal proceedings above, a variety of recurring themes occur. The specific evidence in the case is discussed at length. For example, was evidence in the Chamberlain's car blood, or something else? Did dingo hairs exist on Azaria's jumpsuit, or not? As important as some of the specific evidence might be, at least arguably it is the broader issues raised by "Heart of Stone" that are of even more long-term interest. The role of the media is scrutinized repeatedly--the good and the bad. The motives of the Northern Territory are examined. The fairness of some of the proceedings is questioned, in particular the quashing of the first inquest, and the format and conduct of the second inquest. The justice system is questioned: what accountability do forensic experts have? To what extent do social or cultural pressures shape what we think or believe? Mr. Chamberlain was a minister for the Seventh Day Adventists, and he recounts speculation or accusations about the church and its beliefs and practices. "Heart of Stone" raises a timely question about the relationship and authority of the federal government to its states/territories (a question equally relevant in the United States). These themes and issues are not minor plotlines. They are starkly and directly presented by and through the thirty-year course of the Azaria case.

At one level, the writing is not engaging. But Mr. Chamberlain is not trying to entertain. Rather, "Heart of Stone" is an earnest and sincere effort to present a synthesize thirty years of information and life experiences. It's a plea for justice. It's heartfelt. And, in reading "Heart of Stone," one cannot help but be touched by the enormity of the personal struggle the Chamberlains went through as a family. One night changed a family's life forever, and arguably the course of a nation. The questions raised by this book--religion, personal belief, justice, society, government--are timeless. In my opinion, the book is worth a read, and I personally am glad Mr. Chamberlain took the time and effort to write this book.

About the Author
William was born in Michigan, moved to Sedona in 2002 and began hiking the Sedona trails shortly thereafter. On these hikes he took numerous photos and trail notes and in 2005, started the website, Great Sedona Hikes (http://greatsedonahikes.com) as a way to easily share the photos and notes with his fellow hikers. David was born in Ohio and moved to Sedona in 2003. After moving to Sedona, he began hiking with a local hiking group. He is an enthusiastic photographer, and he and his wife Ruth have hiked over 100 trails and all the vortex sites in the Sedona area. Over the years, both William and David have noted certain places that promoted feelings of enlightenment and peace. They documented these locations by sketch, GPS data and photographs. They have interviewed visitors and locals regarding these "power spots" and identified the spots most often cited as areas where vortex energy was experienced. These are the vortex locations included in this book.

Very Helpful

Fairly thorough description and directions to the various vortexes in Sedona. I liked that the book covered several more vortexes than simply the basic ones. The directions to the vortex was useful, I wish the book actually provided a Lat Long at the actual vortex location. Sometimes it was difficult to find the vortex location from the word description and when you are hiking a distance and the elevations, a wrong turn can lead you to a point where backtracking to get to the correct location, if you can figure that out, is problematic.

We loved this book…Great descriptions of the hikes and easy directions to find starting points. Loved that it showed where the vortex is also on the map.

About the Author

Dr. Jeffery Scott Mio is a professor in the Psychology and Sociology Department at California State Polytechnic University, Ponoma, where he also serves as the Director of the M.S. in Psychology program. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1984. Dr. Mio has taught multicultural psychology since 1986. He is a Fellow in Division 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) and Division 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethinic Minority Issues) of the American Psychological Association, as well as a Fellow of the Asian American Psychological Association and the Western psychological Association. Dr. Lori A. Barker is a professor in the Psychology and Sociology Department at California State Polytechnic University, Ponoma. Dr. Barker is a licensed clinical psychologist and also works part-time as the Administrative Director of the Cal Poly Pomona, Ennis W. Cosby, Child and Family Services Friendmobile. Dr. Barker received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from UCLA. Jaydee Santos Tumambing graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Ponoma, in 2003 with her M.S. in Psychology, specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is now in private practice in the Los Angeles area.

Don't bother with this text if you want to learn about multicultural humility.

I rented this for GRADUATE school. It was so basic, it was a waste of my money. I think this book stereotypes groups of individuals, which I think is the opposite of the purpose of this book. Good thing I only rented it, but it was not even worth renting.

Great textbook!

This is one of the BEST text books I've ever read! I actually read the entire textbook for my summer course and really enjoyed it! The best parts come from the stories and experiences of real people. Love it!
