Entering service with the Dutch air force from early 1938, the aircraft was also built under license in Denmark and Finland. The Dutch D.XXIs saw less than a week of action following the German invasion of the west on 10 May 1940, with many of the country's 28 fighters being destroyed on the ground. However, those that survived the initial onslaught inflicted losses on the Luftwaffe, 15 pilots sharing in the destruction of 14 German aircraft (fighters, bombers and transports). By then, however, the D.XXI had found everlasting fame in Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40. Proving itself a real thorn in the side of the Soviets, the fighter, operating in primitive conditions and against vastly superior numbers, Finnish D.XXIs racked up an incredible score against the Red Air Force, and in particular its bomber units. No fewer than ten pilots became aces during this brief, but bloody, campaign, with a similar number claiming four victories and subsequently 'making ace' in later types. The sturdy D.XXI was highly rated by the leading Finnish pilots of the time, boasting a good rate of climb and the ability to break off combat when required thanks to its high speed in a dive. The D.XXI also has the distinction of producing the first 'ace in a single mission' in World War 2, when then 1Lt Jorma Sarvanto shot down six Ilyushin DB-3 bombers on 6 January 1940. After spending a year providing home defence and flying coastal patrols during the early stages of the Continuation War in 1941, all surviving Finnish Fokker D.XXIs were relegated to the reconnaissance role, which they performed through to the end of hostilities in September 1944.

About the Author

Kari Stenman is the world's leading authority on the Finnish Air Force during World War 2, and has written or co-authored many books on the units and aircraft of this most interesting service. He has previously co-authored volumes for Osprey on Finnish Aces in the renowned Aircraft of the Aces series and on their leading fighter unit LeLv 24 for the Aviation Elite series.

Peter de Jong is a professional editor and translator, and has collaborated on numerous modern history and aviation history books, as well as having written numerous magazine articles since 1995. His comprehensive work on the most historically significant Fokker aircraft of World War 2, the D.XXI, was published in French in 2005, and is soon to be followed by a revised volume in his native Dutch.

An excellent companion to Osprey's other books on the Finnish Air Force in WWII

This book provides excellent coverage of a topic not covered much elsewhere and is generously illustrated with many rare photos. The text is presented in a logical chronological order following the progression of the D.XXI's career as the focus of the war shifted. The color plates are particularly good. I have purchased numerous books in Osprey's "Aces" series, and this book is among one of the best. If you have an interest is the air forces of the smaller countries drawn into WWII by the aggression of their more powerful neighbors, then this book will be of great interest to you. After purchasing this book, I also purchased Osprey's other books covering the Finnish Air Force in WWII. All were excellent reads. Highly recommended.

A little known aircraft in lesser known conflicts.

This work covers the Fokker D.XXI and it's use in WWII.

The development is described, although a bit more sparsely than is usual in this series of books. It does make up for the aforementioned by it's in depth examination of the aircraft's operational use by the Finns, Danes and Dutch in the early part of WWII. If you are interested in the Russo-Finnish War in the air this book is invaluable and more than worth the price of purchase.

If you are looking for technical descriptions of the Fokker D. XXI throughout this time you may be disappointed as this work lacks the usual diagrams and accompanying descriptions other works in this series I have read include. Having said that it is more than worth the cost for the text and pictures relating to the aircraft's combat career.

Fokker D.XXI Aces of World War 2

Fascinating book on an overlooked aircraft. Unfortunately, like the Brewster Buffalo, only the pilots of Finland seemed able to exploit it's true qualities in a combat situation. The author's did cover all three users of the aircraft, Holland, Denmark, and Finland. The color profiles, as always, are superb. A well researched book and I can't wait to read it again!

About the Author
Walter Van Tilburg Clark, author of The Ox-box Incident , The City of Trembling Leaves, The Watchful Gods and Other Stories & The Track of the Cat, lived in Virginia City and is considered one of Nevada's most distinguished novelists. Born in 1909, he ranks as one of Nevada's most distinguished literary figures in the twentieth century, as well as a leading interpreter of the American West. Clark died in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1971.

Contains at least one classic short story

Here are a few sentences from a short article that appeared Nov 21, 2004 in the Washington (DC) Post BOOKWORLD. It was this article that made me interested in this book.

In the 1950s Walter Van Tilburg Clark seemed on his way to becoming a major American writer, both a popular and a critical success. His first and third novels, "The Ox-Bow Incident" and "The Track of the Cat", were made into movies. And one of his short stories, "The Wind and the Snow of Winter," an elegy for freewheeling days on the Western frontier that still has few equals, was an immediate classic. ... Today Clark, who died in 1971, is at least in print: all three novels, along with "The Watchful Gods and Other Stories", the collection in which "The Wind and the Snow of Winter" appears. But he has become an in-crowd kind of writer, championed by a Stendhalian happy few, such as Wallace Stegner, and otherwise getting little attention.

A gorgeous, beautifully written, mostly unknown collection of wonderful short stories!!

I first read this collection many years ago and I was struck by the two most popular in the collection: Hook and The Watchful Gods. Both stories had me gripped and broken hearted and enthralled and amazed and...and...and...

I had read Clark's novels and loved his writing, but this collection remained one of two of my all time favorite short story collections (the other being J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories"). enough has been written about the plots of these stories, but it remains incredible to me each time I go back to re-read them, how engrossed I become in the world that Clark creates. He grips you without any indication of sentimentality or pedantry; his writing is clear and concise and somehow manages to work its way into your soul before you have any idea what has happened. These are among the most beautiful pieces of writing it has been my pleasure to read ---and I am a voracious reader! I try to recommend this collection to everyone, but most people, unfortunately, don't know who I am talking about until I mention "The Ox Bow Incident" -- which I think was brilliant, but did not affect me the way this collection did.

IF you love to read; IF you love the experience of experiencing something thrilling and breathtaking in the reading experience, then by all means, buy a copy of this book. I promise you will not regret it. This is a collection for booklovers and reading-lovers --- and for some of those (me included) who would like to think of themselves as writers. It is, all things considered, a true inspiration.

Jay Wiseman (Jay Joseph Wiseman)(born 1949) is an American BDSM writer and speaker. In 1991, Wiseman started the Greenery Press publishing house with his partner Janet Hardy, author "Lady Green" of The Sexually Dominant Woman. Fit to be Tied

Jay Wiseman's "SM-101" has earned a well-deserved place on most BDSM reading lists. So I have *really* been looking forward to reading his new book dedicated to erotic bondage. I was not disappointed.
Jay starts off by setting the scope of the book. His goal is to provide basic-to-intermediate level ties in terms of both risk and difficulty. He does not cover self-bondage, suspension, complex Japanese "hojo-jitsu" ties, long-term ties, or tying against resistance. This still leaves a pretty wide range of techniques for tying single limbs, "I bet you can't get loose" games, double wrist and ankle, spread-eagle, hogtie, gags and ear muffs, male and female genital bondage, breast bondage, handcuffs, tape, safety issues, and lots of other fun stuff.
Perhaps most surprisingly considering Jay's reputation as a BDSM safety promoter, he evaluates the military-style hogtie using a rope that crosses the front of the throat as only medium risk. I have long advocated modifying the classic hojo-jitsu ties to avoid this, so Jay and I find ourselves on opposite chairs of this particular safety issue. As long as the bottom is closely monitored and not left alone, I agree that the risk from this technique is not too extreme, but it is still something I personally prefer to avoid. Jay includes a "politically correct" version (what I have in the past called the "backpack tie") for we fuddy-duddies.
This is a very handsome and substantial book, at 323 pages, with a *very* sexy cover photo and lots of excellent drawings of knots and prisoners, including gay, lesbian, and het couples. Folks who hang out on soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm and wonder what Jay, Janet, and Sockermom look like will finally have their curiosity satisfied. This is definitely must reading for anyone interested in learning how to tie up their partner(s.)
Highly trained professional stunt perverts may find that they are already familiar with some of the basic techniques. Still, I recommend this for every bondage enthusiast's library.
If nothing else, it is handy to have on the bookshelf to "try out some of these ties" with your partner.

Lots of ways to get "All Tied Up" for the Evening

This handbook is exactly that, a "reference book" for those who want to learn more about this aspect of BDSM play. Until now, there were "bondage" sections in books like SM 101, Screw the Roses, etc but Jay has devoted an entire book to this activity.
Jay has done bondage play for years and years and his experience and knowledge shows through here. As with other books Jay has written, this book is full of safety cautions and health risks related to doing bondage.
Among the sections in the book include a little bit of "theory" on bondage, different types of rope that can be used, different ways to do single or double-limb bondage, breast bondage (a personal fave!), spread-eagled bondage, and bondage equipment.
I like Jay's assertion that you don't need to learn a lot of knots to do good bondage. I'm glad to hear that because I don't know very many knots myself!
A well-written and very informative book. Good job Jay.

There's bad news and there's good news ...

Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook can be considered to be one of the 'classic' texts, in that if you ask people into BDSM to recommend books, this is one of the titles which tends to be named.
As someone who has been into bondage my entire adult life, but who relies on a relatively small number of techniques, I thought it might be interesting to broaden my repertoire.
Let's start with the bad news. The language, style, degree of repetition and statements of the stunningly obvious all combine to give the impression that the first third or so of the book was written with ten-year-olds in mind. Harsh? Written from the perspective of the experienced bondage practitioner? Well, allow me to illustrate ...
'Probably the most common reason that bondage is applied to a consenting partner is to restrict, in one way or another, their ability to move.' ... 'A sleepy or exhausted top will find it essentially impossible to remain properly alert.' ... 'It can be dangerous for the bottom to use a knife or other sharp object to cut themselves free if they cannot see where they are cutting.' ... 'The risk level seems to dramatically increase if the self-bound person unexpectedly falls.'
I could go on, but you get the idea.
Being an American book, Wiseman was clearly also looking over his shoulder for law-suits as he wrote, with almost every other page containing something like 'SM play should only be done by people who are adequately informed of the nature of what they are doing and who are mentally competent to decide for themselves whether or not this is something that they want to do.' All true, but if you are the type of person who needs this to be pointed out to you, you automatically fall into the 'not mentally competent' category (and are also unlikely to be reading the book) ...
These type of statements, and entire paragraphs devoted to points which could be more effectively made in a single sentence, take up about the first 85 pages of the book. Remove the padding, and there is probably about 15 pages of real material in this section. It's a great shame because frustration with the verbose and patronising style could easily lead the reader to miss some crucial material and cut to the chase.
Other bad news? Well, the book could use a few more illustrations, and some points would be more effectively made by photographs, but that would increase the price. Oh, and there's a boxed-out quote every few pages which is usually completely unrelated to the text on the page and thus adds to the sense of pointless padding.
I suspect the book was deliberately padded to give it a more credible page-count. Were it significantly slimmer, it might have been harder to believe that the book really was a comprehensive handbook covering most major bondage techniques. But - apart from suspension - that's exactly what it is. And that's the good news.
Every major type of tie is covered, usually with several variants. Each technique is well explained, usually well illustrated and has an excellent discussion of the considerations applicable to that type of tie. Unlike the earlier section of the book, the safety advice here is generally thoughtful and useful.
There is also a good discussion of the different types of materials, for example the different materials and manufacturing techniques used for different types of rope, and the pros and cons for each. Here again the safety information is excellent, for example explaining why eye-bolts are much safer than screw-eyes (it is very rare for the former to fail, but very common for the latter).
The step-by-step approach and level of explanation appeared suitable for complete beginners, while still containing plenty of material of interest to those of us who have been tying people up for many years!
Do I wish Wiseman or his editor would take a pair of paramedic shears to the first 85 pages of the book? Absolutely. Would I recommend this book to anyone into bondage, no matter what their experience level? Absolutely.

Highlighting one of the more insidious by-products of environmental pollution, Hand explains how fertilizer runoff can result in algal blooms far downstream that leave huge areas of fresh or salt water so hypoxic—or low in oxygen—that only anaerobic bacteria can survive. Though noting that the Baltic contains seven of the world's 10 largest "dead zones," she focuses mainly on the Gulf of Mexico, where problems caused by such runoff (exacerbated both by local oil spills and by federal programs that encourage Midwestern farmers to grow more corn to convert to ethanol) have sharply affected the fishing and shrimp industries. While the author examines some successful reclamation efforts—notably Boston Harbor and on a larger scale the Black Sea—she doesn't point to simple or easy remedies for this growing blight, either. The cramped photos and maps, along with the narrative's tiny type size, give this study a utilitarian look, but the book covers a worrisome topic in more detail than readers will find elsewhere and also offers generous quantities of print and web resources for further research. A Tour De Force Ending Of Cheetham's Trilogy

Have eagerly awaited this work. A brilliant exposition of the relevance of Henri Corbin's worldview for our dying culture. The world is in the soul, not the soul in the world. The complete trilogy is a survey of how we have come to this impasse, and offers the beginning of a means of an escape. The texts of the three Abramanic faiths as a theophany not a prison. To quote the young boy to St. Augustine, "Take and Read..." The World Turned Inside Out; Green Man Earth, Earth Angel; After Prophecy by Thomas Cheetham.

Amazon should offer it for what it is worth......priceless and affordable. i can't believe folks think other folks will spend that sort of money on something that can easily be PDF'd, etc

Like other "classic" Hollywood books--Hollywood Babylon by Kenneth Anger and You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again by Julia Phillips--Hello, He Lied is saturated with sleaze and proves, once again, that most of Tinseltown's stars are seriously lacking in the upstairs department.

In her first book, movie producer and former New York Times Magazine editor Obst creates a peculiarly Hollywood kind of hybrid, a memoir/survival guide that describes what it's really like to get a movie made while still managing to say something nice?or at least benevolently neutral?about everybody in power. Obst left a dream job at the good gray Times to become a "development girl" (scouting material and overseeing script writes) for hyper-ambitious studio head Peter Guber. From Guber she learned that success means never going to a meeting (or doing anything) without a strategy. Her strategy here is to portray herself at work, describing how she has learned to handle tough situations and tough people. Thus, supermogul David Geffen, who once mused during a meeting that she should consider collagen shots, is praised for his personal manager-like interest in his employees' lives. Obst distills her experience into a coda for survival. She knows not to buck major trends ("Ride the Horse in the Direction Its Going," reads one chapter title). She knows when to put projects on the back burner ("Putting It on the Roof"). Above all, she understands the "Tao of Power," as explained in a chapter that reads like a contemporary Hollywood version of The Art of War: "The secret that all powerful people know is that no one else gives you power.... With power, there is no permission to be granted. Permission must be seized." At times, the writing is awkward: "The latent energy that makes imploding friendships so dangerous is the fact they are playlets of this familial struggle." But there are gems in the gravel. Obst's rundown of the difference between an arty "fuzzy girl" as opposed to an Armani-wearing "crisp girl" is worth the price of admission. Photos not seen by PW.

The title reveals Obst's success producing Hollywood films?part adolescent aggression (Hey, you idiot!) and part practical philosophy (lies can be truths). Writing in a breezy, readable style, she frankly steps through the ups and downs of her "high-stakes career" producing Sleepless in Seattle, Flashdance, and The Fisher King. Many bulleted lists ("tips on moguls") punctuate chapters titled "Never Go to a Meeting Without a Strategy," "The Tao of Power," and "My New Best Friend." And she does not shrink from telling a story about herself, particularly if it flatters one of her many powerful mentors. Obviously a sharp, well-read, and industrious worker, Obst has produced a book that is unfortunately short on details about the art of producing and long on sensible advice useful no matter what career you pursue. Primarily for those into Hollywood "wisdom," this book also substitutes as a popular psychology lesson in interpersonal politics. For larger public libraries and where there is demand.?Jane E. Interesting at first...

There are many reasons you might want to read this book, and it serves some needs well. I bought a used copy and it was apparent that others had lost interest partway through.
You think you want to be a Hollywood producer? This book might be for you: the author worked her way up partway (she was, after all, listed as a producer on Interstellar) and has some amusing examples of conversations with footnotes as to the true motives behind the words. She also provides useful rules for various aspects of the business. In fact, these may be the true value of this work, as these rules are applicable well beyond the craziness of Hollywood. She also provides useful information for women in business, where there is plenty of room for improvement. Also in academe.
If you are reading this for insights into individuals, it may be less useful, as it was published in 1996.
If you are a wannabe writer, director, agent or studio mogul, reading this or anything else will not help.
Towards the end it gets a bit self-serving, as others have noted.

Well written, entertaining and easy to read, this book is a fun exposition of Hollywood culture, politics and the personalities involved. Despite not really being in the Hollywood business, I found this informative and something I just had to finish. Highly recommended.

Comprehensive Resource and Tool for Parents/teachers

This is one of the most used books in my library. This comprehensive book contains complete liturgies of the word for all three liturgical years, cycles A, B and C organized according to the liturgical calendar. The book's wonderful introduction gives a great overview of the nature and function of the Liturgy of the Word for children and describes the order used in the book.

For each Sunday, the following items are included: Introduction, Sign of the Cross, Lighting of the Candles, "Sorry", Gloria, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel reading, Discussion, Activity, Creed and Closing Prayer. The bonus feature of the book is a great illustration/activity that can be reproduced each week. These activities are more than just coloring pages. Many are crafts, activities, paper dolls, worksheets and much more.

I would recommend that this book be used not only by catechists, but also by parents looking to make the Sunday Liturgy of the Word truly come alive in their own homes. I refer to this reference frequently. You'll be happy that you invested in this resource for your students and for your own family!

What a wonderful find!!

I have been in charge of the children's mass at my church for a few years now. We had some old books from the 1970's that we were using, but they had inadvertantly got recycled during a clean out that I missed at our church. So, I went on several sites trying to find a replacement. When I found this book, I was apprehensive about what might be inside. I was very happy when it arrived. Not only does it cover the gospel for each week, but it has a suggested activity to go along with it that you can photocopy. I have requested that my church order one to keep with the children's mass supplies as I plan on keeping this one for myself to use not only for the mass, but also as a reference for the sunday school class I teach. This book will help anyone who wishes to teach a child about their religion in an easy and fun way.

A Great Resource for Catechists!

This book is a wonderful resource for RE teachers and catechists. I teach 2nd grade catechism and use the readings in this book at the beginning of each lesson (once a week). The kids love to hear the stories and have told me that it makes "Father's readings more interesting!" The activities are very relevant and complement the readings very well.

The only problem I've had, is that a couple of the readings were too condensed and left out some key details. Therefore, it took a little more effort and time to explain them, and they left the kids a bit confused. But, with careful research and comparison from the readings at Mass, I've been able to clarify any uncertainty.

I highly recommend this book to catechists working at the elementary levels! It is a great addition to the curriculum and helps the kids get more involved in the Mass.
