The intended audience of this book is not people who want to improve their accent. That is far from the aim. This is book outlines the fundamental phonological processes that take place in Spanish. Its audiences are applied linguists, more specifically (spanish) applied phonologists. As a grad student in the field, I've found this book incredibly useful for outlining information that I will need for my qualifying exams.
If you are interested in foreign accent modification or "correction", this book is NOT for you.

Essential Book for Spanish Phonology

This book is definitely written for someone with a linguistics background, but is a must if you are interested in Spanish phonology. It can be also used for an introductory Spanish phonology course, although having an instructor guide a student through basic phonology would be helpful. Hualde covers a wide range of topics from segmental phonology to intonation, stress and dialectal Spanish. The spectrograms are a very nice addition to the book. Although you probably need some linguistics background, it does not necessarily assume that you know Spanish (a plus for a lingiust just checking in on Spanish phonology). In fact, the book focuses a lot on English vs. Spanish phonology, and I suspect this would be especially helpful for an English speaker trying to learn/teach Spanish pronunciation. I would definitely recommend this for both linguists and a Spanish FL instructor interested in better understanding how Spanish is structured (and I would recommend basic linguistics for any FL insrtructor).

Excellent phonological reference

I am using this book for an introductory phonetics course I am taking at UW, Seattle. This book is a primary reference for a class project where I am contrasting the phonologies of Standard American English and Castilian Spanish. The book is very thorough and covers all aspects of Spanish phonology with lots of examples, clearly marking the differences between the dialects spoken in parts of Spain Vs those spoken in parts of South America. Various general linguistic terminology are explained along with the Spanish phonology. I have only some introductory training in linguistics (with no prior exposure to Spanish) and yet find the book very readable and understandable. The accompanying CD is useful. however it would be more useful had the sounds been classified and indexed better. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good reference on Spanish phonology.

About the Author

Patricia Antonacci is a Professor Emeritus of Education at Iona College. Antonacci entered the teaching profession as a classroom teacher for the middle and elementary grades and continued as a literacy specialist. Her long career in public schools brought her a range of experiences as a teacher at all grade levels including a number of years working in diverse classroom settings. As a reading specialist for K through 12, she assisted teachers in integrating literacy instruction in content areas. Working in a large urban district afforded her rich experiences teaching striving readers and English language learners. Antonacci has taught courses at Fordham University and Iona College including the following: reading in the content areas for middle and secondary grades, foundations of literacy, literacy across the curriculum, action research, as well as mentoring doctoral students in conducting research in literacy education. She has published numerous articles and books including (as coauthors) Antonacci & O’Callaghan, Portraits of Literacy Development: Instruction and Assessment in a Well-Balanced Literacy Program, K-3 (2004); Antonacci & O’Callaghan, A Handbook for Literacy Instruction & Assessment Strategies K-8 (2006), Antonacci & O’Callaghan, Using Children’s Literature Across the Curriculum: A Handbook of Instructional Strategies K-8 (2010), Antonacci & O’Callaghan, Promoting Literacy Development K-8 (2012).

Catherine O’Callaghan is a professor of Education and Chair of the Education Department at Western Connecticut State University. She entered the teaching profession as a classroom teacher and continued her career as a literacy specialist with teaching experiences that span across the grades. Teaching in New York City within diverse settings afforded her a wide range of teaching experiences. Her doctoral degree from Fordham University in Language and Literacy initiated her research interests in new literacies, critical literacies, teacher education, and intervention plans for helping striving readers and writers. O’Callaghan began working with preservice and inservice teachers at St. Joseph’s College in the Child Study Department and as an adjunct at Fordham University.  She also taught in the literacy specialist program at Iona College for twelve years before moving on to Western Connecticut State University. Great Resource

I bought this book for an Education class about teaching Content Reading. The book is well organized. The strategies are really useful and even though some of the techniques are a little difficult to understand from the description, the examples provided at the end of each strategy really help in showing how the strategies would work in any class or content area. I know that I will use a lot of these strategies again so I am probably going to keep this book as a resource after the class is finished.

This is awesome and I would recommend it to any classroom teacher at any grade level. The strategies in this book is unbelievable. It is recommended for middle and secondary. My principal looked at it and was caught up that she suggested buying one also.

Major Disappointment

What a disappointment! Great content however the poor spelling and translated information takes away the credibility of the subject. Did anyone even proof read the Kindle edition? I would have given it a 1 star but I didn't "hate it" -- still has a lot of relevant points - just painful to get through them.

If you love food or travel or reading about food or travel. . .

This is Samanth Subramanian's debut novel and what a debut! Samanth is a journalist by profession and he uses the narrative version of journalism to full efect in "Following Fish"

India is a country with a long and diverse coastline and as the author says Fish inhabit the heart of many worlds - food of course, but also culture, commerce, sport, history and society" The author travels to 7 locations spread across the Indian coast (+ Hyderabad which is landlocked), interacts with locals, investigates a story special and specific to that location and then pens it down for our reading pleasure.

Any book which covers an aspect of my hometown Mangalore favourably, will definitely be recommended by me. :) But "Following Fish" offers 8 more reasons (chapters) for me to recommend it!

Starting with West Bengal, where he sets off in search of the perfect Hilsa ("If Bengali cuisine were Wimbledon, hilsa would always play on centre court"), he is initiated into the differences between Bangladeshi & Bengali hilsa as he traipses across Howrah fish market & Kolaghat market and eats at places as diverse as The Park in Kolkatta, Oh Calcutta, an eatery on Mirza Ghalib Road and a shack in Diamond Harbour. He does throw in a few recipes from Chef Vasanthi of The Park (Warning" most of them don't mention any quantities) for good measure.

In Hyderabad, he visits the Bathini Goud family - dispensers of the annual "Goud fish treatment" for asthamatics. Exploring the history of the treatment and the myths around its origin, as a good journalist, he also investigates the naysayers theories and facts and chronicles the entire event from the initial pooja at the ancestral Goud house to the public dispensary at the Exhibition grounds in Nampally.

In Manapadu in Tamil Nadu (TN), Samanth researches the dynamics of social relationships between Parava Catholics and Kayalar Muslims since the 16th century, how historical Hindu customs are still followed by the Paravas with a Catholic veneer and the declining importance of the Jathi Thalaivan in society. It is here that the author encounters Aruni - a researcher of fish as a food in TN who introduces him to fish podi - a dried fish powder peculiar to that part of the country.

His quest to discover Kerala through its toddy (local alcohol) shops is delightful. "We stumbled onto the most ideal method (to root out the best toddy shop in town) by chance - commandeer an auto rickshaw and solicit its drivers guidance. The driver will be so struck by appearance of people after his own heart - people who will get out of an early morning train, exit the station & ask for a toddy shop - that he may even forget to inflate his rate." The cuisine of toddy shops in Kerala has a style, nature and flavour of its own, normally consisting of extremely spicy fried food which would necessiate the consumption of even more toddy. While the Karimeen/Pearlspot is the most famous fish in Kerala, there are a lot of other varieties on offer too.

In Mangalore, he initially flounders in his quest for the perfect Manglorean fish curry, but soon with the help of friends he discovers eateries that are hidden gems, known to the locals and discovers tawa fried fish, rawa fry and other delicacies too. His encounter with Vasudev Boloor (President of multiple fishermens associations) leads to an impromptu meal of home cooked Manglorean fish curry which any Manglorean would know is infinitely better than anything that a restaurant can ever serve.

In Mumbai, he meets with anglers Baptista & Danny Moses. He joins Baptista & his adult nephews on a fishing trip to their favourite ocean spot in quest of the elusive and highly spirited sailfish. He also interacts with the original settlers of Mumbai - the Koli fisherfolk who are more weloming of "outsiders" than the more violent political parties of this age. The kolis also initiate him into the subtle differences between Koli, Gomantak & Malvani styles of cooking.

In Goa, he encounters different kinds of fishermen - those who indulge in it purely as a hobby, (angling is a Goan pastime) and those dependent on it for their livelihood. His conversations with the locals only seems to emphasise that the governments greed and inefficiency is completely destroying the fisherman's habitat.

The boat builders of Mangrol and Veraval in Gujarat are his last stop.Their long history of boat design is even suspected to extend to the Indus Valley civilisation. While the principles of boat building appear unchanged, modern technologies have been put to good use to help speed up some of the processes while others like caulking the boat for water tightness have remained unchanged for hundreds of years..

Samanth Subramanian has a wonderful, distinctive style of writing with a wry sense of humour and an eye for detail. There is an investigative depth to his research and a passion for the subject he covers.

This book is an easy read but don't let that mislead you into dismissing it lightly. It contains a wealth of useful information for the foodie traveller and a cook who is comfortable with grandma style recipes (a pinch of this, a dash of that etc)

If you love food or travel or reading about food or travel, this is a book you will thoroughly enjoy and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I look forward to more books from him.

The vast stretch of our country that lies supine, with its legs stretching into the mouth of the sea and ocean is a land of diversity. The culture, traditions and even the food habits vary from place to place. However, there are also a few things that bind the different communities and the different people of this country. Fish is one such product that binds the different communities that stretch along the coastline of India-from Goa to Kolkata! The book, following fish, is therefore an interesting book delving into the different ways in which fish is treated and used by these people whose lives are touched by the coastline of India. As a fish lover, i noticed that the author has avoided talking of fresh water fishes-those that are found in the many rivers criss-crossing through the plains of India. Nevertheless, its a throughly njoyable book and those who love to know more about India and its culture will find the book vey interesting. Highly recommended!

Must-get for any Tolkien fan!

Yes, Tolkien wasn't a professional artist, but his art for the Hobbit really works on many levels, and gives the reader a better idea of what Tolkien had in his fertile and amazing imagination when writing The Hobbit.

Much of the art here has never been seen before. Most versions of the Hobbit have no more than a score of Tolkien's illustrations, if that. A lot of this art was recently discovered among the Master's papers, and now has been digitally scanned and included for your viewing pleasure. (Interesting how few books the Professor wrote but how much background stuff he came up with while writing them, eh?).

True, in some cases, we have several versions of the same scene- several preliminary and then the finished piece. But I think that adds to how Tolkien was developing the scenes in his mind while writing.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL book :). Containing over a 100 never-before-seen illustrations by Tolkeins himself, this was a magical journey into the world created by Tolkeins that I'd imagined as a kid - and it was almost exactly how I'd imagined it based on his descriptions.

The Plan of God Revealed

This book makes the Bible harmonious. It lays out the plan of God as shown in the Bible, and all of the author's information is supported by Scripture. The book gives the answers to many questions that people have asked over the years: Why are we here? Why is there evil in the world? What hope is there for mankind? This book (and its companion volumes) has been the most influential in my life. I encourage all who have not been satisfied by the answers (or lack thereof) given by others to these questions to read this book. You will not be sorry.

E. Nesbit's The New Treasure Seekers takes us back to the start of the last century and the six Bastable children who get into scrapes by always trying to be good. Older children will sympathise with the senior Bastables as their younger siblings create havoc - while all listeners will chuckle at their Just William-type antics. This Bastable book stands on its own but the earlier The Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods are also available. And though they sound as though they are being read by a cast of dozens, it's because reader Teresa Gallagher gives every character a distinct voice - an amazing performance. Nesbit wrote three books about the Bastables: The Story Of The Treasure Seekers, in which the six Bastable kids look for treasure to restore treir family's fallen fortunes, New Treasure Seekers, a beautiful collection of wonderful Bastable adventures, and the Wouldbegoods, in which the motley troop goes on vacation with their cousins, form the soceity of Wouldbegoods, (in which the motive is to do one good deed a day) and fail miserably. The first thing Noel does is climb the chimney and fetch down a few bricks, a bird nest and a couple tons of soot. Wouldbegoods is by far the best, but if tou want to read it free go to Google.com, type in New Treasure Seekers, click on first choice and you can red either New Treasure Seekers or Wouldbegoods at your leisure.

Oh, I am sooo in love with Oswald Bastable. I first read the Wouldbegoods when I was twelve, and since then, I've read all the books in the Bastable series. He's the greatest character I've ever encountered. Ah, so real!
