A Must Have on any Heathen's Library Shelf

Compiled By Kveldulf Gundarsson

Truly an excellent work. This competently researched massive repository of Germanic Lore is an absolute must for any Asatru/Heathen library. I really appreciated, Part One: History. Very few modern works on Heathenry go into the basic foundations of the early societies of Northern Europe. Volume 1's tracking of the Pre-Migration period is seldom mentioned outside academia. Following the progression of the Indo-European migration thru the Bronze and Iron Age's established a strong foundation from which to build. While much of the information on the early periods is based of a fair amount of speculation, it is well researched scholarly speculation. These hypothesis's are based on the most up to date research by both Archeological and Linguistic scholars.

Part Two: Lore. Probably one of the most in-depth and well organized looks at the "Norse Pantheon", a reader will be able to find outside of Academia. If any of the players in Norse Mythology have been missed I can't think of them. I especially like the large sections on Tyr and Heimdal. Both of which are often given only minor places in many modern works.

I have only two minor problems with this otherwise excellent work. Both of which are more my personal opinion rather than reflection on the book itself. Firstly, I found the lack of an index very annoying. My brain cells cannot retain all this information and a quick reference index would have been a great help to me. Granted I know why there is not one , (basically cost and size, what chapter do you leave out in order to include and index?), and while I understand and agree with the reasoning I don't have to like it. I will say however, that the book itself is very well organized and that the table of contents is straight forward and easy to use. My second problem is, again not directed at the information presented, but more at my ability to shift mental gears. I'll explain; this work is the cooperative effort of over 40 people and researched by many, many more. As a consequence of multiple authors, the writing styles from section to section change rather abruptly at times. I found that I had to set the book down and come back to it later on several occasions. It was like finishing a chapter in a Jim Butcher novel and then starting Nietzsche, I had problems shifting mental gears. Again more of a readers problem than an authors. Having said this, these were the only faults I have so far found in Volume One so now I'm picking nits.

All & all I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in Germanic/Norse History, Myth, Lore or the reconstruction of Northern European ancestral religion, "Our Troth Volume 1", is a MUST have!

Must have for those who wish to read of Northern European and Germanic Culture and religion

This book is an amazing and well thought out explanation of the Northern and Germanic culture and religions from as far back as is possible with historical data. I would personally recommend that anyone interested in History, Culture, or Religion from these areas should buy this book. It is neatly organized into sections that can be read independantly of each other but is best read all together. The amazing amount of detailed work and effort put into this is work is amazing. The detail available is great but it can sometimes feel overwhelming to read and absorb. None the less I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the topics addressed in it, it is surely a new way of looking at things.

Naima B. Robert: Na'ima B Robert is descended from Scottish Highlanders on her father's side and the Zulu people on her mother's side. She was born in Leeds, grew up in Zimbabwe and went to university in London. At high school, her loves included performing arts, public speaking and writing stories that shocked her teachers!
She has written several multicultural books for children.
She divides her time between London and Cairo and dreams of living on a farm with her own horses. Until then, she is happy to be a mum to her four children and keep reading and writing books that take her to a different world each time.

A very loving romance set in a world I know little about

Sometimes it's really good to get a look at what fits into the "romance" template. It really makes you define your standards. As a person who reads a fair number of romance novels, the majority of which contain intercourse (or other sexual activity, and dictated by genders), I know that a lot of people think that romance has to have physical chemistry.

But I think at the core of my definition of romance, there is the evolution of a relationship with a resolution that is satisfying to all the participants. The rest is set-dressing.

In this case, the setting is really unusual for the romances I read -- almost everyone in the story is an observant Muslim in modern London, and that pervades everything about the book, from the rhythms of the day to the way the lovers feel about how they can interact. They are both conscious of what their boundaries are, and why they might want to violate them and why it's important to hold to them. I never got the feeling that they resented their restrictions, just that they were difficult, which I really appreciated. It's hard to write that state of tension without making a character sound unbearably whiny.

I liked that everyone talks about their faith, and the different ways they get comfort and support from it. I loved the rejection of the possible suitor who I thought of as St. John Eyre, who wanted a collection of good points instead of a partner. There is a glossary in the back! You might want to bookmark it, although the book is written smoothly enough that you can get most things from context. I also really liked that both of the main characters were service-oriented people, and that was part of what made them a good match. It seems more persistent than a shared taste in shoes.

As a romance, it was sweet, but not overwhelmingly good. As a cultural introduction, it was much more elegant than many. The combination was great because it got me through rough patches in both halves of the whole.

Read if: You love a romance that involves long-term consideration of compatibility. You want to understand a bit more about Muslim people who are not all the same caricature.

Skip if: You only read romances for the naughty bit. The first time they touch is after they get married and not onscreen.

Also read: An Assembly Such As This, by Pamela Aiden. It's also a novel on the less sexual and more religious side, this time based on Mr. Darcy and his faith life. No, really! I loved it.

Unique story, A painting in words

So great to read about a love story told from the perspective of Muslim youth who are struggling to keep their relationship virtuous. Although the plot of the story is not action filled, the author keeps her readers' focus by painting a very clear picture of emotions and tiny but telling mannerisms. Very well written.

A great book to catch glimpse of halal romance & the life of practicing Muslims

My first time reading a Love story by a Muslim author and I love it! A great book to catch glimpse of lifestyle taught by Islam.

The mood is different than of the standard love books out there for sure. It has a special aura to it - the story felt 'virgin' and pure. I'm not exactly a teenager but the author managed to transferred me back to my younger years. Remember the days when you were too young to get married but you have crushes anyway? That's it. This book will make you feel giddy all over again!

Muslims or not, this book is perfect for young adults and adults alike. Read it and see if you can say no to the same love stories. You CAN fall in love and keep it HALAL.

Halal means adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the holy book, the Quran.

According to the authors "Aim and Scope of this book is that in today in a globally insecure world, security should be a key driver of value. Value from Security is deliberately written from a number of perspectives for two reasons.

One, to demonstrate the value of being able to have a broader vision about the drivers and motivations of professionals, stakeholders and influencers where corporate security can play an enhanced role"

Two, to show that is only through networked sharing that the true value and potential of our proposed form of security can be realised through an organisation.

The authors provide "It is time to reconcile a number of opposing views and beliefs about the role of security. It is not simply cost of doing business, a boring necessity, a way to go get boxed ticked in frameworks of regulation an compliance"

Just to give you at least some idea what the book addresses, here are some of the questions answered in Chapter One (Security in Business - Cost or Contributor?)

How it can be seen as an elemental force positively influencing an entire corporate space? What is driving the development of views and what is the new universe going to look like? Often, security appears to start from the wrong base. How can you justify and measure the absence of something like non-delivered or executed threats, versus the clear delivery presence of something, as a profitable result?

In the final chapter, the authors summarize "Security Principles and Key Points" underlining the approach and attitude to the contemporary business in delivering Value from Security. Lastly, there is an section of Notes, References and Acknowledgement . I rate this book very highly primarily for two reasons. First, because the content is solid, coming from a wealth of experience which the authors so generously share, they also explain how security can perform a transformational role, not just a passive one.

Sweden was neutral during the Second World War, but despite this, thousands of Swedes wanted to participate in the war - the largest group in Finland, where over 10,000 Swedes applied to fight against the Red Army. Another much smaller group, which saw action against the same enemy, was the Swedish SS volunteers. While the Danish and Norwegian SS volunteers are fairly well known today, their Swedish counterparts remain more unknown. Still, they saw action on both the Eastern Front and NW Europe, and participated in some of the bloodiest clashes: the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa, the winter of 1941/42, the battles of Kursk, Arnhem, Normandy, Narva, the Warsaw uprising, the Cherkassy and Kurland pockets and, finally, the end in Berlin.

Compared to many other groups of volunteers, there was never an official recruitment drive in Sweden, which is why only some 180-200 men enlisted. Those who wanted to recruit themselves often had to make their way to the occupied countries - a fact that makes those Swedes who joined the SS volunteers in the truest sense. As such, this book is as much a history about the units, which the Swedes served in, as it is a story about the individuals themselves. It also asks, who were they? What motivated them? What did they experience and how did their service end?

With the help of diaries, letters, interviews, police interrogations and German documents from both private and official archives, the history of the Swedish SS volunteers is reconstructed. The main focus is on those who served at the front, including volunteers in the 'Wiking', 'Nordland', 'Nord' divisions, minor units such as the Den Norske Legion, SS-Panzer-Brigade 'Gross' and the war correspondents of the SS-Standarte 'Kurt Eggers'. Also included are the Swedish non-combatants in the SS, such as the desk clerks within the SS-Hauptamt and security service personal of the RSHA.

The book lets us follow individuals such as Hans Lindén, who was the first named Swedish volunteer to fall in action aged barely 19 years old; the unpopular Swedish SS officer Gunnar Eklöf; Elis Höglund, who after several years on the Eastern Front deserted and returned to Sweden; Gösta Borg, who volunteered for the SS a second time as he was denied the chance of becoming an officer in Sweden; and Karl-Axel Bodin, the only Swede to be included in the list of suspected criminals at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, who joined the SD in March, 1945.

The book includes over 150 photos, everything from civilian photos, portraits from the men's time in the SS, pictures taken in the field, post-war photos and documents. Most are from the private albums of the volunteers and many are previously unpublished.

Thoroughly researched from primary sources, and providing plenty of absorbing detail, this book is a valuable addition to the history of the SS, and the men who volunteered to serve in it.

About the Author
Lars Larsson, a naval architect, is Professor of Hydrodynamics at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is also president of Flowtech International and was for 18 years a scientist at SSPA Maritime Consulting. He has written 100 papers on computational fluid dynamics and has taught both academic and public courses on yacht design. A lifelong sailor, he has been a consultant to the Swedish Olympic Sailing Team and three America s Cup teams.

Best book on Swedes in the Waffen-SS

Definitely the best book published in English about the few dozens of Swedes that volunteered for the Waffen-SS. Very well researched with a wealth of biographical details including the pre and post war period. Covers in detail the Wiking division's summer 1941 campaign and the 11th SS Division's summer 1944 history. Provides fascinating information on the SS's efforts to recruit Estonian Swedes as SS cannon fodder. Fortunately completely free of Waffen war-porn or hagiographic treatment, Hitler's Swedes provides an unvarnished look at the reality of serving in the SS - covering war crimes, disillusion, desertion and even murder. Definitely worth a look by those interested in the history of the Waffen-SS.

Uri Orlev was born in Warsaw in 1931. He spent the years 1939–41 in hiding in the Warsaw ghetto with his mother and younger brother. When his mother was killed by the Nazis, he and his brother were sent to Bergen-Belsen. After the war, Orlev went to Israel. He now lives in Jerusalem with his wife and their three children.
In 1996, Uri Orlev received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international recognition given to an author of children’s books, for his lasting contribution to children’s literature.

It was better than I thought.

This book is a excellant book in which a 11 year old boy tries to survive in the warsaw ghetto. His mom disappears. His father is taken away by the Germans to go work. The boy runs off and now must survive on his own. His fathers friend tells him to stay at a abondened building for as long as it takes for his father to come. He finds a hide out above the ruins. He hides out there with his pet mouse. He makes two new friends when he shoots a german soldier with the gun his father gave him. He saved their lives, but one of them was shoot. It takes care of the man with the wound while the other guy takes care of some buisness. The wounded man tells of a way to get to the other sideof the wall. After a doctor helps the man, he has to leave. The boy is once again alone. He meets some girl on the polish side that becomes his girlfrind. They find a waay to communicate over the wall and he visits her once and awhile. She has to move so they promise after the war to meet in the ghetto on new years eve. The winter is very cold and he probaly cant survive it. His father actually comes back after 7 months.
