About the Author
Joseph R. Dominick received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1970. He taught for four years at Queens College of the City University of New York before coming to the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia where, from 1980 to 1985, he served as head of the Radio-TV-Film Sequence. Dr. Dominick is the author of three books in addition to The Dynamics of Mass Communication and has published more than thirty articles in scholarly journals. From 1976 to 1980, Dr. Dominick served as editor of the Journal of Broadcasting. He has received research grants from the National Association of Broadcasters and from the American Broadcasting Company and has consulted for such organizations as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Chemical Society.

I love it

I needed this book for Mass Comm class but it originally cost $132. So I checked Amazon and they had it for way less! I was even able to download it immediately.

Great book on Mass Communication

I used this book for a class. If you want to learn about popular forms of mass communication then I recommend this book. It puts it in laymen terms. I don't work in the mass comm industry but consume mass comm greatly. This made me understand the inner workings of the devices of communication I use on the daily. It also helped me see how technical mass communication is and how departmentalized and divided it is. I also learned why it's so hard for musical artists to make money in entertainment. I never knew their money was divided so many ways between so many entities when it comes to their albums and songs. This is a great book for any one who is interested in Mass Communications and wants to learn the basics and theory behind what it is and about popular forms like radio, TV, advertising, movies, etc.

Great textbook, rental is good deal

I bought this book for my son through Amazons semester rental deal, which was less than half the cost of buying it at his school. He enjoys the book and it has helped him get A's on all his tests for his Media class. He says it is up to date and interesting; the inside cover has a pic of Prince William's & Catherine's wedding. The book covers all media from its history up to current blogs & media issues through 2012. We are pleased with the rental deal, they send us a prepaid envelope when we are done with it and then we ship it back, saving us the hassle of re-selling it. I agree with the other reviewer about price, all text books are ridiculously over priced.

Good Tomcat 7 User Guide

I gave it five stars because it managed to tell me everything I needed to know in 244 pages or less.

I liked how it regularly provided optimal security advice at places where the subject matter was relevant. As an intermediate user I usually found the strategy to be better than mine.

I recommend any server administrator read over the Apache Tomcat 7 User Guide if he or she care about tying down the open design.

Wrong title

This book is really incorrectly titled. It should be titled "How to write Java servlets". This book has about 5 pages about Tomcat, and about 240 pages of how to write web apps. If you want to know how to configure and administer Tomcat, look elsewhere. If you want to write web apps that run on Tomcat, this is your book. It's not a user guide. It's a programming guide. It's not about Tomcat. It's about web apps that happen to run on Tomcat.

Tension builds as Marcus finds objects missing that negate common robberya clock, food, a sleeping bag. While the mystery takes center stage, two subplots involve Marcus' concern about his widowed mother's growing relationship with Nick, the man who lives upstairs, and Anjelica, a girl in his class who is interested in him. Characters are well drawn, particularly the mother and Nick, both of whom are well-meaning, caring people who obviously like and respect kids. Bunting does an admirable job of showing how time drags while Marcus waits in the empty house, as well as of developing Marcus' conflicting feelings about Nick and Anjelica. With its easy sentence structure and vocabulary and attention-getting first chapter, this is likely to have appeal to reluctant readers as well as non-demanding mystery fans. Mysterious Story

This book is about a boy named Marcus that lives in California. His dad had passed away a couple of years ago. Marcus and his mom now have a paying tenant named Nick living in the room above the garage. When it gets close to Christmas things start missing like a key, food, flashlight, and a sleeping bag but nothing really expensive and no money was missing. Marcus jumps to blame Nick. Marcus doesn't like Nick because he likes Marcus's mom. The author drops clues and hints everywhere in the book. I often thought it was Nick but things just kept telling me it wasn't. I thought it was odd how Marcus's mom thought that he had gotten up in the middle of the night and she saw the bathroom light on, but Marcus did get up but had not been in the bathroom. I was really shocked when I found out who it was. I think this is one of the best books I've ever read. It has adventure, mystery, and some of it is funny. I highly recomend this book to people who love a good mystery.

I work with Middle School students. I got this book from our library, and read it in just two days. It was wonderful! I was not bored for one minute! This was one of the best books I have ever read in my life! There is never a dull moment. The book makes you feel good all over. Kids will love it!

British historian, author, and journalist Nicholas Foulkes is cofounder and editor in chief of Finch's Quarterly Review, luxury editor of British GQ, and contributing editor to Financial Times's How to Spend It and Vanity Fair. His other books for Assouline include High Society: The History of America's Upper Class (2008), Bals: Legendary Costume Balls of the Twentieth Century (2011), and Nardi (2012).

Not really about the Swans of the 50's

I am a big fan of Truman Capote's swans - Babe Paley, Gloria Guinness, Jackie O, etc. Based on the cover photograph and the title of the book, I expected this book to be about the fabulous group of women from the 1950's. Sadly, there is very little in this book about the swans. The cover is the best photo of one of the 'swan's' than any other photo in the book.
The book is more about that time period - so there is many photos of places where the rich and famous of that time vacationed and partied, magazine articles,etc.- but very little about the swans. The husbands of the swans are featured more in this book than the women. I did not find the book interesting of informative.
If you are looking for something that will take you back to that time period and not so interested in the women of the time, then you might enjoy the book. But, if you want information about Capote's swans- you might do better with something else.

Large Beautiful Tome of Pure Wealth

My husband surprised me with this book for Christmas…..It is a treasure! Very large so the photographs of the beautiful people are marvelous! Captures the essence of the vast wealth of those contained in these pages….wonderful life, style and glamour. Swans, is to be studied over and over again; each time finding some new jewel. Mr. Foulkes has created an excellent tome of the privileged pastimes.
