Absolute satisfaction!

As soon as I finished "Over You" I went in search of this sequel "Second Chances". This book has it all...mystery, drama, conflict, love, family...characters to root for and characters you'd like to slap (did I say that?)...and the ending leaves you happy. I so appreciate an author who can write a good story without stooping to gratuitous sex for titillation...and whose characters can talk to each other without throwing in foul language. I wish more writers would take a lesson from Christine's dedication to clean writing, BRAVO!

I honestly loved this book! Definitely a 5 star for me. I first read "Over You" and couldn't wait for this one to come out. I found this book suspenseful at times, and romantic at other times. Loved the story line and the events that kept me reading page after page. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good book to read. This author has many other books that I have enjoyed and have been very satisfied with each one.

Chasing Forgiveness 1 THE FEUD April—Two Years Before
My hands are so cold, I can barely move my fingers. My knuckles crack each time I try. I see Mom under the bright lights, and my heart begins to claw its way up my throat. The butterflies in my stomach are turning into bats, and I think, What am I so nervous about? I’m not the one up there. But logic doesn’t work when your mother is standing next to the game show host, in front of three television cameras and a packed studio audience. Family Feud is very serious business.

“All right, Megan,” says the host to my mom. “Your sister got you one hundred and twenty points—you need eighty to win. Are you up for it?”

Mom smiles politely. “I guess,” she says, and giggles a bit. I can tell she’s just as nervous as I am. No, she must be more nervous. There are beads of sweat all over her forehead, replacing the ones they blotted off while she waited backstage as Aunt Jackie took her turn giving answers.

Now it was all up to Mom.

Off to the side I can see Grandma Lorraine, Grandpa Wes, Uncle Steve, and Aunt Jackie, all waiting for Mom out of the camera’s view. Why did they have to give Mom the anchor position? That’s the roughest part—I know about that. If she messes up, she’ll feel as if she lost the whole ten thousand. But then again, if she wins, she gets all the glory. I know about that, too.

The host begins his little speech from memory, like a policeman reading someone their rights. “All right, Megan, you’ll have thirty seconds in which to give your answers,” he says. “If you repeat any answers your sister gave, you’ll hear the buzzer, which means try again. Are you ready?”

Mom nods. I can see her wringing her hands, out of the camera’s view, as the host looks down at his question cards.

“A state,” says the host, “that begins with ‘A.’ ”

“Arkansas,” she says.

“Children’s favorite holiday.”

“Christmas!”

Bzzzz! “Try again.”

“Halloween!”

“A make of foreign car.”

“Mercedes!”

“An animal you find at the zoo.”

“Monkey!”

Bzzzz! “Try again.”

“Horse.”

She shakes her head immediately, knowing she goofed. That one’ll cost us.

“A fruit you eat on cereal.”

“Banana.”

“A famous painter.”

She doesn’t answer. She’s taking too long.

“Picasso!” she says.

Bzzzz! “Try again.”

No answer. She’s blanking out!

“Da Vinci,” she says.

Dad, sitting next to me in the audience, shouts with joy. That must have been a good answer. The audience applauds, but it’s not over yet.

“All right,” says the host, “turn around, let’s see how you did.”

Dad stares straight ahead, concentrating on Mom. Like me, he feels like he’s right up there with her under the lights. His hands must be cold, too, his stomach full of bats.

Without looking at me, Dad smiles wide and shakes his head in amazement. “She did it, Preston,” he says to me. “I really think she did it!” He stares at Mom with a mixture of love and awe. Under the bright studio lights, she must look like a movie star to him. She does to me.

And all at once I know that Dad is right—that Mom has done it. Not just because Mom gave mostly good answers, and not just because we beat that other family in each and every round, but because we deserve to win. Because right now, everything is so right, so perfect, that it can’t go wrong. It was simply meant to be—and when something’s meant to be, no one on earth can stop it. Not even the host.

One minute later, we are ten thousand dollars richer. Dad is holding me and my brother, jumping up and down with both of us in his arms. We stumble out of the audience and down to the floor, and all of us hug and kiss Mom. Grandma, Grandpa, and the rest run out from the sides to join us. We all hold each other, jumping up and down in front of the cameras like imbeciles, but we don’t care. This is our family, this is our day, and we can be imbeciles if we want!

Dad hugs Mom, giving her a big kiss, forgetting that my brother and I are between them. We get crunched and bounced around, but I have to laugh. The crowd cheers, and we get swallowed up in all the excitement and all the grown-ups around us. It feels like magic—like another world—and I silently wish that this moment would never end. That Dad would hold Mom like this forever, with my brother and me smushed tightly, tightly, between them—our whole family pressed so close together that my feet barely touch the ground. . . .

Dr. Gary Smith is the Fletcher Jones Professor of Economics at Pomona College. He has published eight college-level textbooks, two trade books, and more than eighty research papers. His research has been featured in various media including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Motley Fool, Newsweek, and BusinessWeek, CNBC, and WNYC. Gary was a keynote speaker on real estate at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC and the Mortgage Finance Industry Summit in New York City. His book Standard Deviations, Flawed Assumptions, Tortured Data, and Other Ways to Lie about Statistics, was chosen as a London Times Book of the Week. Gary received his BA in Mathematics with Honors from Harvey Mudd College and his PhD in Economics from Yale University.

A healthy balance of useful cautions and advice. The main message is that if it seems to good to be true, it probably isn't true. This sensible skepticism applies not only to get-rich-quick schemes, but also to the flimsy idea that you should buy a stock after reading a favorable news story about the company. On the other hand, Smith does explain some conventional and novel ways to make sensible investments. Among the conventional ideas are to buy stocks with low prices relative to dividends and earnings. Among the novel ideas are to buy stocks with clever ticker symbols and avoid stocks with the most optimistic earnings forecasts.

If you are looking for get-rich-quick schemes, this is not your book. If you are looking for confirmation that patient, intelligent investing pays off, this is your book.

Awesome book and must read

Arjun : without a doubt. Truly awesome book by Dr Sweety Shinde.

When I first came across the title, I was not sure I wanted to read another of Gita- Mahabharata thing.
But somehow the book's cover and FB page made me give it a try and I am glad I did.

No, it is not a twisted version of Mahabharata. It is a saga of Arjun the great warrior, who never got the due credit for his greatness and Draupadi who has always been misunderstood through ages.
The narrative is gripping and as the story unfolds the reader is thirsty for me. Like the author words it ' If learning was a river I was forever unquenchably thirsty'....so is the reader thirsty for more coz it ends too soon.
What I liked best was trying to understand Draupadi's feeling when she was forced into polyandry, her love for Arjun and her strength and feelings when she was disrobed.

The book has lovely quotes, and few of my favourite are
1. Parents should come with a warning sign that they are not perfect; elders are just flawed people who happen to be born earlier.
2. Tears are infinitely more precious than blood. Blood spurts from the body, tears stream from the soul.
3. If motherhood transformed a woman into a goddess, then why should the act responsible for this transformation be a sin.
4. But the best is always a state of flux, it is a constant endeavour; not a one time title.
5. Virtue is that which lasts inspite of power.
6. No person is great in isolation. It takes many hands to shape life. Denial would mean conceit and conceit is not the same as self respect.

Overall, definitely a must read.

Deep and Dramatic

The Mahabharatha has traditionally been a plot-oriented epic with a multitude of main characters. It is for the first time that I am seeing it through the eyes of Arjun. Equal time and importance has been given to portraying the character of the eminent Draupadi, who provides the perfect foil for Arjun, performing the role of an antagonist and ally. The characters of Arjun and Draupadi continue to haunt me long after I completed reading the novel wherein lies the real victory of the author - getting into the skin of the historic characters and employing her creative intelligence to etch their trials and tribulations within the framework of the unalterable incidents from the epic.

While my tryst with the Mahabharatha started several decades ago, the five Pandavas somehow functioned as a collective protagonist and I had viewed Arjun as just one of the lead characters (akin to one of the heroes in the multi-starrer Hindi films popular in the 70's and 80-'s!. This novel made me realize that he is the most under-revered hero from Hindu mythology, as the author effectively intertwines the courage of a valiant warrior with the fragility of his emotional relationships - with Krishna and with Draupadi - traversing the gamut, from tranquility to trauma. The depth of understanding displayed by the author and her ability to impactfully dramatize the complex cast of characters of this complicated epic is truly commendable.

The novel is written in first person from a dual point of view - Arjun and Draupadi - a Herculean achievement which can get tenuous at times. Staying with each point of view a little longer in a chunk rather than crossing over to the other character too soon would have made for an even more effective read, as would a variation in the tone to identify the two points of view with greater ease. The permutations of interactions and conversations between Arjun, Draupadi and Krishna are a treat to consume and a major highlight of the book. (The dialog tags could have been a tad more prominent though, the conversations would have been even more enjoyable if I did not have to figure out who was saying what at times, but this is a minor distraction)

While the plot driven epic had always made excuses for the follies of Yudishtir, the epitome of Dharma, reading this novel through the eyes of Arjun and Draupadi - gave me my biggest Aha insight - that this was but a crutch to cover up his character weaknesses, since he represented the 'good side' of the epic! And full credit goes to the author for demystifying this myth without being judgmental.

The novel is a must read for all those who have any connection or exposure however limited, to the Mahabharatha.

Another Perspective on the Age old saga

Arjun: Without A Doubt is one of the latest to join the bandwagon of Mythological story being retold. This time around we get a glimpse into the Epic Mahabharata from Arjun and Draupadi’s perspective.

Having said that, I really have no need to summarize the story as almost everyone knows it already. Instead, let me tell you about what I thought of it as a book and my take on the way the Epic has been narrated. The first thing that attracts attention is the fact that the author has chosen to tell the story from Arjun’s point of view. Arjun is probably the most popular and most beloved of all the Pandavas and as such it can be difficult to narrate the story. However, the author has done a good job of it and anybody who adores Arjun will love reading this book. On the other hand, we also get a glimpse of Draupadi’s perspective on everything as the story unfolds – I was enchanted by the scene of her Swayamvar. This book also gives us a glimpse into Draupadi’s mind about her polygamous status and the Vastraharan episode. The author’s language and narrative style is very interesting and inviting. She has her own style with the language she uses as well as her narrative. The language is not ‘flowery’ yet it has a nice feel to it while the narrative is very descriptive. I was engrossed in the pages as they simply flew by.

Now it is time for the things that I did not like as much… Without giving out many spoilers, I have to say that I did not always agree with some of the author’s interpretations and justification for some of Arjun’s actions. I understand that the author wanted to show Arjun, her protagonist, in a good light… but to imply that Arjun was almost never at fault or always had the right reasons for his actions is just not done. Also, to put Arjun on the right side, the author has given some of the other characters a darker shade than necessary. And while I am not saying that none of the others were at fault, I just wish we had seen the grey areas of Arjun’s life to make him more real.

Overall, this made for an interesting read that I did enjoy to the fullest while reading it. It might make you rethink on some of the events of Mahabharata and also see some of the characters in a new light.

One dimensional in its approach

In comparison to pre-algebra books we have purchased in the past, this one is just okay. My daughter needed this for school; if we home schooled, I would have definitely picked a different book. The definitions are written clearly but some of the explanations, examples and word problems leave a bit to be desired. There seems to be a real push towards the idea that there is only one way to achieve the correct answer. Fortunately, I have a degree in math and have been able to work with her and show her there are many ways to approach a problem. Math is actually a flexible topic - it is a shame that this book takes a one dimensional approach.

At Home Math Book

I purchased this as an "at home" math book for my daughter. It is not the same book she is using but close to the one she is using. The one she is using was almost $100 and that was ridiculous to pay. There were not enough at school for her to bring one home to use. It has been so helpful. The only difference was the page numbers were off by one or two and that was it. She had a test the next day after the book came so great timing Amazon.
