A book written by veterinarians for veterinarians.

I bought this book seeking for practical information on how to successfully raise ratites, mainly Rheas and Ostriches. However, it deals mainly on Ostriches and Emus (has 2 to 3 paragraphs on Rheas and no pictures about this bird). Its section on reproduction focuses on artificial incubation in a serious and straight forward veterinarian vocabulary (as does the whole book) but it virtually ignores the natural incubation process, which is used by most small ratite farmers. I do recommend the book if you are interested in the feed composition area, it brings lots of tables, graphs and tips on ratite feeding. Its section on ratite anesthesiology is also very complete. I do not recommend the book if you are an average farmer who didn't graduate in veterinary medicine and are looking for rpractical advice on ratite breeding as it is written in a technical vocabulary directed for Vets and therefore carries the technical terms and conditions necessary for a serious (but not practical for the average farmer) veterinary assistance at a ratite farm operation. The only chapter written in an average vocabulary is the one on Anatomy of Ratites, including drawings of the internal organs of all ratite birds, again, if you are not a Vet you may find it pretty difficult going beyond this point of the book.

Just delicious!

This book has been on my Amazon wish list for a few years now. After a health scare a couple of weeks ago, I decided to pick a healthy vegetarian cookbook to get started on improving my eating habits. I received the book, and went straight to the grocery store to get the ingredients for the first recipe. It was bean taco recipe and I was a little uncertain bc I strongly dislike bean burritos/tacos (like from taco bell), but I was pleasantly surprised. The dish turned out AMAZING! It was so good I can honestly say I can't see myself eating ground beef tacos ever again bc the bean recipe was just so much better than the "real" thing.

An ingredient index in addition to the recipe index would be a useful time saver- sometimes I have things around the house I want to find a recipe for, and this isn't easily done with this title. Recipes are diverse and easy to prepare. I would use this book a lot more if I could search by ingredient- great recipes to make with kids, great way to get them to try new things.

This is like a guide to healthy living, and it's so many recipes you'll never get bored. The food is amazing, and you'll feel a lot more energy after-wards no matter what dish you try. Just go to a farmer's market take the book with you and get started.

How and why do languages change over time? Could the way an individual child develops affect aggregate language change? What do the mechanisms of change tell us about the evolution of language in our species?

To answer these questions, David Lightfoot looks closely at young children. A child develops a grammar on exposure to some triggering experience. A small perturbation in the trigger may entail a different grammar in the next population of speakers, with dramatic effects. This "sensitive dependence on initial conditions" is the key to explaining how languages change, and why they change in fits and starts.

The "cue-based" approach to language acquisition presented here is a radical departure from formal models of language learning. Lightfoot challenges conventional understanding by showing that language change is essentially contingent - unpredictable but explainable; and he contests how far natural selection enables us to understand the evolution of the language faculty in the species.

About the Author
David Lightfoot is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Maryland, College Park where he is also Associate Director of the program in Neural and Cognitive Science. His books include The Language Lottery and How to Set Parameters.

A decent introduction to Historical Linguistics

At the outset Lightfoot states that this book is intended for the "interested layman." As such it is a decent book with some theory, some data and a good deal of scientific philosophy, or maybe the history of science. However to any reader who may have a backround in such subjects the book seems to be a dangerous gloss of important points. It should also be stated at the outset that Lightfoot is not ashamed to put forth his own ideas on these subjects in which he may, or may not be an expert. At times this tendency is obnoxious, and occasionaly, most often in his chapter conclusions, he states his case honestly and makes it clear that there are some things which he may be mistaken in. As for his final conclusions(the last three chapters) there are a few good points, a paragraph here and there which deomonstrate either Lightfoot's knowledge of his own limitations or at least intelectual honesty. Unfortunately, for the most part these chapters are misleading, rehtorical and uninformed.

I really liked this book

I really liked this book. It is short and to the point. At first I wasn't sure if I would like the answer and question format, but I found it to be much easier to read because I got direct answers instead of having to read pages of information on a subject. The questions were all questions everyone would ask and I resonated with most of them. After I finished reading and went to bed, my body experienced a strange vibration. I think the best message I got from this book is to ease off of a subject. Sometimes when you want something with all your heart and are desperate for it, you try so hard to obtain it. Do anything and everything possible to make it happen and get so frustrated when you don't see any results. The first thing you think is I am not doing it right, or I'm doing something wrong, or maybe I didn't earn it enough. What he teaches you here is that the very act of trying is what is blocking you. Do anything and everything you can instead to take your mind off it. That is the hardest part, especially when you are obsessing over it. I found that taking on a new interest or hobby, such as reading a book or for me collecting shells on the beach, really helped. You will find that once you stop obsessing over the thing you want most is when you will finally start to see movement - usually within a few days. At first, I thought no this can't be, if I don't think about it how will the universe know what I want? That is also a mistake. It already received your asking and declaring the first time you intended it - probably the first hundred times (since I asked every day). It knows exactly what you want already so you don't have to keep pounding it in. I think the confusion with all these teachings is some say you get what you think about, and others say to stop thinking about it. So it leaves you frustrated not know what you are supposed to be doing. The trick is to think about it in the beginning, really love and want it with all your heart and daydream about it. This usually lasts a few days. When the idea is new and exciting. This is the creation process. Once that initial excitement over having it starts to fade, that is when you let it go and stop thinking about it. You have already put it out there as this is what you want. Now let it come to you.

I will give you a small example. I was in the mall with my daughter one day and a man had a display out with sugar gliders. I thought it was the most adorable pet and my daughter and I both wanted one. But they were $400 a piece, and that's not including cage and supplies. I was disappointing. But I went home and did research on them and found out about care and training and things, and then looked on craigslist to see if I could find one cheaper from someone maybe giving one away. They were all asking hundreds of dollars as well. So I gave up the idea, knowing I didn't have the money and even if I did it would be better for me to use it towards bills. 7 months later, I got a text from a guy I used to work with. He was just an acquaintance. He was a quality control inspector and would come and go for weeks on different jobs from another state. He had gotten my number from my boss who knew I loved animals and the guy asked if I wanted not one but 2 sugar gliders with cage and accessories for FREE. I couldn't believe it. He told me he was about to return home to California with them and found out they are banned. He is not allowed to have them so he had to get rid of them quickly before he left. he made a decent amount of money so it wasn't much for him to spend on whims like that. I of course took them.

The smaller things like that are easy to get. I think because you don't invest so much in them as you do for a house, or money, or relationship. The major desires we think we have to really try hard to get. But I think if we applied the same concept they too would come easy and quickly. We just have to learn to want and then let go and let it come to us. I am still working on this practice and seeing results every day. I have signed up for KindleUnlimited and downloaded his other books. For me, I raise my vibration reading LOA material. When you feel your mind beginning to obsess and you start getting depressed, go read LOA books or listen to youtube videos on the subject. It will take your mind off it and raise your vibration.

It All Makes Sense Now...

There is so much in this book I don't even know where to start! I really like Richard Dotts' work and this latest book is one of the best. He has gone through the process of putting all the techniques into practice and working his way through the frustrations that I have encountered. This somehow makes it all more 'realistic' and not just the 'think positively and you will become a millionaire' style of personal development. As the author says there are many ways to raise your own level of consciousness and his style definitely appeals to me. There are new techniques here even if you have read vast amounts of this genre. I am going to read it again which I almost never do, there is so much great advice in here. Thankyou Richard!

Another softly informative read by Dotts

Richard Dotts is one of the best contemporary authors of explaining how "the law of attraction" actually works in our lives. His explanations are almost always gentle and often not at all what we would expect.

The gist of this book is how to let go of the concept of an outcome in order to best facilitate outward manifestations. In the words of the great Neville Goddard, this is basically about arriving at the point of "attention minus effort."

This short guide can easily be understood by anyone serious about manifesting. Highly recommended.

I married smart women, some thirty years ago, Christmas, kids a stressful project at work, I was being a SOB. "Wife stops and says" Kids wait here, I need to take care of your father, we are going up stairs, ; I am think big fight, when we get to the bedroom; "wife says" Pull down your pants you are getting the hairbrush. Short story, I could not talk her out of it, it was the triple darn, "wife says" you are not man enough to take it. She lights me up!

It was all gone; when that pains outside equals the pain of the stress inside you it disappears. I was a new loving husband, no more did I needing that drink after work, no more freaking out if something went wrong with the project in work, a clear head, and a sore butt that lasted for about a week and than some!

A women need to understand it is not just about the man but the boy inside him. I truly believe it is in our genes. We have a twin 5 year old boy and girl grandchildren, and yes we have to watch them! The girl, the time out thing works, the boy, maybe it is the need to challenge authority but he loves to push my wife's buttons till she whacks his butt, then he is ok! I don't know, you can take your pick, need of structure, has to challenge authority or asking for attention, or a desire for corporal punishment but there is that mischief child inside us, ("Which by the way means end badly") that bad boy inside us that has to play till someone corrects us, except when we do it as men we do really stupid things!

So, what if no one stops us?

For me it is like having a toothache and knowing you need root canal and hoping you can find a dentist to take care of it, either you pull it out yourself or you do something really stupid like drinking, cheating!
Yes I have been there, looking and even trying to find ways to hurt myself. That stress, guilt, it hurts!

To me it is akin to therapy.

To add to the author book, his suggestion is making a list, you cross that line and you get it. That means the bad child has to cross that line. Not to mention it is kind of fun toeing that line! It is that child inside you!

Our solution was if it got that bad for me I would simply take the brush out of hiding and put it where she could see it. If it disappeared I knew she agreed. If she on the other hand took it out it was a warning and if I didn't put it away, that it was my way of saying I agreed otherwise I heeded her warning. There where time I would put it way and it showed up the next day, I knew I was not getting out of it!

Part of the process is that feeling of having to go for that root canal and waiting in the waiting room to be next, waiting till that day came was a little game she enjoyed playing.

Understand it wasn't like you did this every month perhaps a couple times a year. Plus there were also those two or three shots that came as warnings.

Now long we have been together, 40 years!

To all women, you fell in love with not only the adult in us but with that child as well.
